Undertale creator and developer of Deltarune Toby Fox announced in a blog post status update that Chapter 2 of the game will be coming by the end of 2020, though with a few caveats and no solid release date. Deltarune was the surprise of 2018 when it suddenly dropped out of nowhere for free, and fans have been eager to dive into more of the game’s world, which felt during Chapter 1 like an expanded version of Undertale, complete with the usual assortment of memorable characters and witty dialogue.
For those unfamiliar with both games, Undertale released in 2015 and immediately shook up the RPG genre with its quirky take on the hero archetype. Players were actively punished for engaging with enemies in the traditional combat forms, and the good ending of the game only comes if players do not kill any of the characters they meet along the way. While that might not seem as innovative now, that’s because the industry has had five years to catch up, and several other titles that bring big questions to protagonist roles have emerged since. Deltarune Chapter 1 follows a similar path in terms of design, and immediately scratched the Undertale itch many consumers had.
Now, the Deltarune Chapter 2 release date is apparently creeping ever closer. According to Toby Fox in an update post on the Undertale official website, he states that he believes “we can complete this chapter, content-wise, before the end of the year (not accounting for translation, bugtesting, and porting).” That’s a big reveal, since Deltarune Chapter 2 has a lot of hype around it despite the slow-burning development process. It’s also exciting for fans as Fox stated that he is “very confident” about the game’s second chapter.
Why the Deltarune Chapter 2 release date has taken so long to be announced was also explained in the blog, and it’s for good reason – Fox has been dealing with health issues, particularly those centered in his wrists. This has made development understandably difficult, and the developer took time to address his status for concerned fans, stating that he will be looking into “physical therapy again and/or investigat[ing] surgery to repair my wrist.” He also took the time to thank his team for helping out during the difficult time.
Given the playerbase that Undertale and Deltarune Chapter 1 garnered, there’s no doubt fans will be happy to have the next chapter take as long as it takes so long as Fox can try to remain healthy during the process. With that said, it appears Deltarune Chapter 2 is a lot closer than was perhaps expected prior to the update. The next question, then, is exactly when the Deltarune Chapter 2 release date will be – one that fans will no doubt begin speculating on immediately.
