Although Vikings has come to an end, this universe will continue its course with a spinoff series titled Vikings: Valhalla, and according to some, it will cover the battle that ended the Viking Age. Historical dramas with a touch of fantasy have become very popular in recent years, and among the most successful TV shows from this genre is Vikings. Created by Michael Hirst (The Tudors), Vikings premiered on History Channel in 2013, and even though it was originally planned to be a miniseries, it lived on for a total of six seasons, coming to an end in December 2020.
Vikings initially told the story of legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his travels and raids alongside his Viking brothers, from the beginning of the Viking Age (marked by the Lindisfarne raid, as seen in season 1) onward. As the series progressed, Vikings shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys, making them the protagonists, especially after Ragnar’s death in season 4. Although Vikings managed to keep the audience’s attention for the remaining seasons, many felt it wasn’t the same without Ragnar, and so the series came to an end after its sixth season, bringing its main characters’ arcs to an end but also making way for the spinoff series Vikings: Valhalla.
Set a century after the events of Vikings, Valhalla will tell the stories of some of the most notable Norsemen in history, as are Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson (also known as Harald Hardrada and played by Leo Suter), among others. Valhalla is currently filming after production had to be suspended briefly due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Netflix recently gave fans a small taste of what this new show will look like. As part of Netflix’s Geeked Week, the streaming giant shared a behind-the-scenes look at Vikings: Valhalla which has fans of the original show and history enthusiasts theorizing that the series will include the big battle that put an end to the Viking Age: the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place at the village of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, in England, and it was between the English army under King Harold Godwinson and the forces led by King Harald Hardrada and the English king’s brother Tostig Godwinson. Although scholars have proposed different end dates for the Viking Age, the Battle of Stamford Bridge is widely considered as the one that marked the end of it, as Hardrada was defeated by King Godwinson. Now, back to the behind-the-scenes footage, there are many shots of a huge bridge, suggesting this will be an important setting in Valhalla, and there’s even a glimpse at the battle that will take place there.
If Valhalla covers the Battle of Stamford Bridge, it’s unlikely there will be another Vikings spinoff series after this, so fans surely won’t want to miss this new series. It’s unknown when Vikings: Valhalla will release, but until then, fans of the original series can look further into the history of the Viking Age to get an idea of what the new show will cover and the type of battles they can expect.
