Riot Games’ VALORANT is the company’s response to some of the present day’s top FPS trends. It’s a little bit Overwatch in its hero system and Counter-Strike in its mechanics, with some of its own unique flair to set it apart from its competitors. Riot Games first iterated on the MOBA formula to create League of Legends and then the auto-chess formula for Teamfight Tactics, both leading games in their respective genres; Now, their foray into FPS gaming is hotly anticipated.

The first proper look at VALORANT gameplay was ultimately canceled once coronavirus lockdown orders began go into effect, making planned events in Los Angeles and Barcelona unfeasible. Instead, however, according to esports journalist Slasher, an online version of the event is now scheduled take place this weekend.

Whether live or online, the planned meeting is a “capture event,” meaning that rather than livestreaming gameplay, pros will have the opportunity to capture footage themselves, to be released in the coming weeks after an embargo date. Slasher reports that this date is tentatively set for April 4th.

To kick off this VALORANT weekend, four of its developers, Anna Donlon, Sal Garozzo, Joe Ziegler and Trevor Romleski will introduce the game to those participating in the now-virtual event. Then on Saturday and Sunday, the invitees, which includes pro gamers, streamers and YouTube creators, will face off against some of the game’s current alpha testers. It’s those games from which footage will be captured, to then be released online at a later date.

Slasher also adds that the lifting of the embargo on footage from the capture event will likely coincide with a closed beta announcement. Once sign-ups for its closed beta period go live, only streamers and pros will initially have the ability to request access, with public sign ups to be introduced later on in the process. He even cites one Reddit user who caught text that was briefly added to the VALORANT website explaining the closed beta process.

VALORANT currently has a planned release of Summer 2020, so even if the exact dates change from those that were provided to Slasher, it’s reasonable to expect expect new VALORANT content very soon either way.
