Verizon is holding a game development contest to see who can make the best mobile football game on their 5G network.

Verizon Communications has a 5G network now, which is cool. However, this probably hasn’t resulted in all that much excitement. Your funny cat videos probably don’t play any smoother and your Twitter feed doesn’t refresh any faster. To many, it might seem like 5G is a bit of a do-nothing upgrade.

To change that perception, Verizon is holding a contest that leverages the full power of their 5G network, and they’ve partnered with the National Football League to do it.

Their idea is to hold a contest to see who can make the best mobile game on their network. Since the NFL is involved and the game will debut at Super Bowl LIV, the game has to be football related, which is less exciting, and it has to use all 32 franchises in the league, which is even worse.

However, there is nothing in the rules that say each of those 32 teams can’t all be armed with lasers and compete in a sort of space-based, post-apocalyptic arena combat simulation. On 5G, or whatever.

Here are the deets: Verizon will accept submissions for the contest from now up until August 11th. Submissions are basically a form that describes the proposed game and why it needs 5G to work right. Verizon is really looking to showcase the power of 5G, so it has to do something a little more impressive than most turn-based online mobile games.

They’ve probably got a mini-Madden NFL game in mind here, but we’re still going to see what they say about our post-apocalyptic combat football game.

Once submissions close, the judges evaluate all the entries and then invite the top 5 teams to Games Jam, an event where they’ll be able to showcase a working prototype of the game on Verizon’s 5G network. Then, two teams will be picked as the winners and handed $400,000 to develop their game for its debut at Super Bowl LIV.

Since the winners are announced on September 5th and the Super Bowl is on February 2nd, that gives the winning teams about 5 months to finish their games. Mobile games are usually less time-consuming to develop than console/PC blockbusters, but 5 months is still not a lot of time.

After their debut at the Super Bowl, the games will be published on Google Play, thus making this contest open to Android users only. Also, only US-based companies are allowed to enter and everything is subject to the approval of Verizon and the NFL.

We still have hopes for our laser-based game, but good luck to anyone else who enters!
