An inventive Twitter user has cracked the code on how to access all the new footage of The Matrix: Resurrections. The fourth Matrix film, directed by Lana Wachowski (making this the first Matrix movie not to be co-directed by her sister Lilly), will be coming to theaters and HBO Max on December 22. It will be the first Matrix film since The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, and will feature returning actors Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.
While the first official trailer doesn’t actually arrive until tomorrow, WB has released a virtual Matrix 4 marketing campaign that allows fans to plumb the mysteries of the Matrix and access new footage ahead of time. On the web page, viewers can select either the blue pill or the red pill. Depending on which pill is chosen, how many days are left until the trailer, and the time of day it is clicked (which is spoken aloud during the teaser), the pill will unlock a selection of new footage from the film, in over 180,000 different variations.
Twitter user linuxct shared a thread explaining how this website, WhatIsTheMatrix.com, works. The web page generates a new URL for every different combination, and linuxct, who is a mobile security analyst, reverse engineered the page to figure out how. In the process, they did something that would make Neo proud, creating a Codepen where viewers can enter in any time field they wish, in order to view every possible combination.
Included among the footage that viewers can unlock is a series of first-look images of several Matrix 4 characters. These include the aforementioned returning characters of Neo and Trinity. Also visible in the snippets are cast members playing as-yet-unknown roles, including Jonathan Groff (Hamilton), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman), and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist). Though not in the teasers seen so far, Neil Patrick Harris will appear as Neo’s therapist. Christina Ricci and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are also confirmed to be in the cast.
Obviously, 180,000 combinations is a little too much for one person to handle, but it’s exciting to have the power to access the entire scope of what this website has to offer. Doubtless, this teaser drop isn’t the only trick that The Matrix: Resurrections has up its sleeve, so Matrix fans should gear up for an exciting Fall. Neo is returning to the big screen, so one would do well to remember that nothing is as it seems, and there’s always a new secret to be discovered.
