Sylvester Stallone once “met” his most famous creation Rocky Balboa in a vintage promotional clip for Rocky V. The Rocky movie series currently has eight installments, and while some are definitely better than others, it’s remarkably consistent in terms of quality. The only entry that’s really considered a dud is 1990’s Rocky V, which saw the titular character retire from boxing and become a mentor to a new fighter called Tommy “The Machine” Gunn. Tommy’s ego and ambition later sees the two men come to blows.

While Rocky V featured the return of John G. Avildsen – who helmed the original movie – and steered away from the glossy excess of the fourth movie, it just doesn’t work. Rocky V’s sluggish pacing, gloomy tone and cliched melodrama make it the least enjoyable outing of the franchise, which is an assessment even Stallone agrees with. The actor would later return with 2006’s Rocky Balboa in an effort to redeem the series, which saw the boxer come out of retirement for one last bout. The Rocky mentor storyline was also handled in a much more dynamic way in the Creed movies.

Around the time Stallone made Rocky V, he was attempting to transition away from action movies. He tried a couple of comedies with Oscar and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot – which Arnie tricked Stallone into making – and this swing towards more lighthearted fare can be seen in a vintage Rocky V clip. The short video sees Stallone introducing viewers to his personal artwork, but he actually meets the character of Rocky and the two have a heartfelt conversation.

The Rocky Meets Stallone video is sweet in one way, as Stallone is paying tribute to the fictional creation that made his entire career. Rocky V was originally supposed to be the final movie in the saga, with Rocky even dying in one version of the script, so the video is coming from a since place. On the other, it’s quite cringey, with many of the gags falling flat and being a little too self-congratulatory. That said, there’s a nice meta quality to Rocky labeling Stallone “Rambo!”

The vintage Rocky Meets Stallone clip may not have aged well, but it’s still an entertaining relic. In 2021, a Rocky IV director’s cut was released, which saw Stalone re-edit the sequel to make it more tonally in-line with the rest of the saga. In interviews, he also mentioned being interested in going back to Rocky V and reworking that entry too, even though he didn’t direct. Intriguingly, the late John G. Avildsen did release an unofficial Rocky V director’s cut online in 2002, which inserted deleted scenes and offered a new score.
