Nintendo might portray itself as the happy and colorful alternative to PlayStation and Xbox, but the company has a history of not playing well with others. It’s why it came as quite a surprise when it started to release games on mobile. Even more of a surprise was when Nintendo released Mario Kart Tour, a mobile-only chapter in what might be its most successful franchise. Great on the surface, but bad news for Switch owners who are expecting to see Mario Kart 9 some time soon.

Why Can’t We Have King Bob-omb?

To make matters worse for Switch-owning Mario Kart fans, Tour is getting the kind of attention gamers have wanted its console equivalents to get for the past couple of generations. New characters (or new skins for existing characters at the very least) are added every two weeks. Some of those characters have never made it onto a Mario Kart console game’s roster, despite repeated requests from players. The same goes for tracks featured in Tour.

On the flip side, other than a roster any Mario Kart die-hard would kill for, Tour really isn’t that great. Since almost all phones utilize touchscreen technology, the controls are what they need to be, but still not great. It is also riddled with more microtransactions than players can shake a Joy-Con at. Some of its characters might be appealing, but a lot of them require a fair amount of grinding in a short amount of time to be unlocked.

Mario Kart 9 Is A Long Way Off

Since Tour is effectively a Mario Kart spinoff, why hasn’t there been a Mario Kart 9 on Switch? Well, there are a few reasons why that might be, or not be in this case. No doubt the minds behind Mario Kart have been putting, and continue to put most, if not all, of their efforts into Tour. It isn’t just a console game they can offer up and then leave players to it. It requires constant care, and that might be delaying a new console installment in the franchise. There’s also the not-so-minor matter of how well Mario Kart 8/Deluxe continues to perform sales-wise.

Mario Kart 8/Deluxe has sold more than 30 million copies and is the second best selling Mario Kart title of all time behind Mario Kart Wii. However, since it has remained in the Switch’s weekly top ten every week since it was released three years ago, there’s every chance it will eventually clinch the number one spot. This is also why Nintendo is in no hurry to replace Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

If people are still buying this version of the game, what’s the hurry in making a new one? Plus, Nintendo has typically only released one Mario Kart game on each of its consoles. Even though Deluxe is technically just a newer version of the Wii U’s Mario Kart 8, as time goes on, it looks increasingly likely it’ll be all we get during this generation of console.

Although, as Switch sales remain strong, perhaps Nintendo will take the same stance with its latest console as it does with its games. Should it stick with the Switch for longer than it originally planned, Nintendo will have to give us Mario Kart 9 eventually, right? Right?!
