Weird Al Yankovic is one of comedy’s greatest living legends, who has written and performed multiple song parodies with some even overtaking the original song in popularity. From such beloved hits like “Eat It” to “Amish Paradise”, the man is an icon in the truest sense of the word. Despite being best-known for his music, Weird Al’s career extends past the music world.

Weird Al’s also been known to occasionally take a shot at acting, whether playing himself or a separate character, popping up in various projects. While he tends to stick to smaller parts over a leading role, the singer has more than proven his acting ability. Despite the massive number of TV credits on his resume, Weird Al rarely makes an appearance in a movie, but whenever he does, it’s always a major delight (even if the movie itself is bad).

10 Tapeheads (1988) – 5.8

In this 1988 rags to riches story, John Cusack and Tim Robbins play two best friends who after losing their jobs as security guards, start up a video production company, and attempt to hijack a Menudo concert to broadcast a performance of their childhood heroes, Swanky Modes. Weird Al is just one of the films with many celebrity cameos, including Bobcat Goldthwait, Ted Nugent, and Courtney Love.

Based on that small list of names, it’s easy to see just how much of an 80’s movie Tapeheads truly is. The film reeks of the culture and fashion of the decade. Not every joke and reference still sticks the landing like they once did, but what makes it so dated gives it its charm.

9 Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994) – 6.5

The Naked Gun movies are some of the most recognized parody comedy movies. While the third and final film of the trilogy, The Final Insult, is probably the weakest of the three, but still manages to deliver quite a few good laughs. As a recurring gag, Yankovic makes a cameo in all three movies. In this one, he’s briefly seen getting out of the limo.

There’s no real reason for him to be there, but the fact that he just happens to be in the Naked Gun movies at all just gives them a whole different flavor. Like Bruce Campbell’s cameos in Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man films, the Naked Gun just wouldn’t feel the same without Weird Al.

8 Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) – 6.7

Conceived by SNL’s The Lonely Island, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a surreal and cartoonish satire on documentaries about celebrity life. In the film’s climax, Yankovic makes a brief cameo as the lead singer of the fictional band Hammerleg, who introduces the reunited “Style Boyz” at the Poppy Music Awards.

The Lonely Island and Weird Al Yankovic have yet to make any sort of musical collaboration, but just to see them in the same movie is satisfying enough. In a film that’s jam-packed with hilarious celebrity cameos, Yankovic’s is one of only a few to be a fictional character rather than someone just playing themself but manages to stick out because of it.

7 Tiny Tim: King For A Day (2020) – 6.8

One of Yankovic’s more recent and more overlooked works in his filmography happens to be a serious documentary about an overlooked artist, as opposed to a comedic mockumentary like Popstar was. Tiny Tim: King For A Day chronicles the career and private life of singer and musician Tiny Tim, whose eccentric appearance and performances were just as memorable as his music itself.

Yankovic is the documentary’s narrator, serving as Tim’s voice via readings of his old journal entries. He perfectly captures Tim’s secretly plaintive nature and internal loneliness. This proves Weird Al’s knack and talent not just for voice acting, but for his ability to tackle a more serious subject matter. He delivers a more authentic-sounding performance for it.

6 The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear (1991) – 6.9

The second Naked Gun installment, The Smell of Fear, isn’t as tiring as the third, but still not as funny as the original. This is the only film in the franchise where Yankovic plays a character rather than just appearing as himself.

He plays a gunman who holds the entire police station at gunpoint before being unintentionally thwarted by Frank Drebin when he opens the door, knocking him over. Yankovic even shaved his iconic mustache for the role, which shows his commitment to even the smallest role.

5 Teen Titans Go! vs Teen Titans (2019) – 6.9

While the Cartoon Network series Teen Titans Go! has received a less enthusiastic response compared to its more serious predecessor, the two films that have been based on it have gotten more favorable reactions. Audiences were ecstatic to see the return of the current shows 2003 counterparts in Teen Titans Go! vs Teen Titans. Seeing the teams fight with and against each other was something special to watch.

In the film’s beginning, Yankovic voices Gentleman Ghost, a lesser-known DC villain whom the Titans face off against. Like most of Yankovic’s film work, his role is small but highly memorable. The film itself manages to deliver on many things that fans had wanted to see in the crossover.

4 UHF (1988) – 7.0

In his first and so far only leading role in a feature film, Yankovic in UHF plays an unemployed dreamer who buys the station of a local public access channel and begins to program it with original shows that turn it into a mainstream phenomenon. Weird Al also co-wrote the film, and it’s fascinating to see his talent for parodies translate into film. He continuously references and pokes fun at other classics like Indiana Jones and Rambo.

It’s surprising to know that Yankovic never had another starring role in any other film afterward, opting for cameos and guest spots on TV shows instead. Though, he would break this streak and voice the titular lead character of Disney Channel’s Milo Murphy’s Law. UHF, however, is not only an easily recognizable 80’s cult classic but also a constant reminder that if Yankovic could easily become a leading man yet again.

3 Batman vs Robin (2015) – 7.1

In another animated film based on characters from DC Comics, Batman vs Robin follows the conflict between Damian Wayne/Robin and Bruce Wayne/Batman as Damian struggles with his father’s “no-kill” rule.

In a rather unexpected dark turn from his previous film work that showcases his acting chops, Yankovic voices the villain known as Dollmaker, a strong, monstrous man who abducts and brainwashes children, turning them into a violent killer “dolls”. The character is killed off rather early, but Yankovic’s vocal performance, combining sincere menace with childlike innocence, makes it one that sticks with the viewer throughout the rest of the film’s runtime.

2 Phineas And Ferb The Movie: Candace Against The Universe (2020) – 7.2

Phineas and Ferb is considered to be one of the greatest Disney cartoons ever made, and it’s not hard to see its appeal. The story structure was repetitive but created several unique opportunities for clever jokes and incredibly catchy musical numbers. The series second movie, Candace Against the Universe, goes through an even bigger departure from the format of the TV series.

Yankovic makes a seconds-long cameo as “Shirt Cannon Guy” at a baseball game. Certain fans may be disappointed to know that while he was set to have reprised his role as the title character from the creator’s other show, Milo Murphy’s Law. Unfortunately, his scene was cut out. Maybe Disney will release the deleted scene in the future.

1 The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad! (1988) – 7.6

The first film of the Naked Gun series is the kind of theatrical parody film that just isn’t made anymore. It’s not just a clever spoof, but it’s a classic comedy that stands well on its own merits.

Yankovic’s brief cameo serves as the punchline to one of the film’s funniest moments. After Drebin addresses his frustrations to the press at an airport runway, his boss Captain Ed Hocken interrupts his venting, pointing out that they’re there for Yankovic, who is then seen exiting the plane. It’s easily one of the best jokes in the franchise and the greatest use of Weird Al in a cameo role.
