Fans of werewolf fiction have a brand new release to anticipate with the announcement of Wereworld, a brand new illustrated novella from author Ben Percy and artist Francesco Francavilla chronicling a year of unthinkable horror as an entire town is increasingly consumed by a werewolf curse, one full moon at a time.

The digital publisher NeoText will be publishing the graphic novella on September 14, and Screen Rant is pleased to offer readers their first details about this new supernatural horror story. Horror fans won’t need to wait long to enjoy this story for themselves, but thus far, the promise of a small Minnesota town being transformed in more ways than one–more and more desperately with each passing month, and moon–seems the perfect brand of slow-burn nightmare for talents like Percy (The Ninth Metal) and Francavilla (Afterlife with Archie).

The first official cover art teases the terrors of Manitou Street (set among a small Minnesota town), presumably once the backdrop for idyllic, bucolic, small town living. But with windows shut tight, and the home marked with a pentagram, and falling within the grasp of a clawed werewolf claw, the sense of a year of increasing terror speaks for itself.

Current readers of Percy’s work in the world of Marvel’s X-Force and Wolverine know that such a premise is fertile ground for world-building (expect to see the small town residents grow increasingly adapted and determined in defiance of the werewolves growing among their ranks). So we’ll leave it to Percy to set the stage for this unique horror story, and why a talent like Francavilla was the perfect partner to bring it to life:

Francesco Francavilla is a hall-of-famer horror artist, and I’m thrilled — and chilled — to join forces with him on Wereworld. Our story takes place over the course of one horrific year and is arranged into twelve chapters that tear away like the pages of a blood-stained calendar. A contagion is spreading. A contagion that aligns with the moon. A contagion that consumes its host with primal urges. A contagion that at first seems far away from the maple-lined, shade-soaked, sprinkler-greened homes of Manitou Street. But steadily — month by month — the sickness finds its way into the community, and when the moon grows full, houses become steel-doored, barred-window fortresses and friendly neighbors are driven apart by paranoia with surveillance cameras and pistols aimed at one another. This is a planetary crisis but we fix our attention on one town, one street, and one family in particular that is trying to hold itself together even as the world is tearing itself apart. Wereworld is a horror story as well as a social experiment, and you could say that it reads like some cross between The Purge and American Beauty.

Wereworld will be published digitally by NeoText on September 14, 2021.
