Fans of the Persona series celebrated the 10-year anniversary of an important in-game event by successfully making the call for a Persona 3 Remake trend on Twitter. The trend references January 31, 2020, the date ten years after Persona 3’s final in-game battle. A remake has not been officially announced, but the trend brings up an interesting question: What could a Persona 3 Remake improve about the original?

While the recent Twitter rumblings of a remake are nothing but the hopes of fans, a Persona series remake wouldn’t be unprecedented. Persona 4 Golden released with enhanced graphics and new features in in 2012, and it went on to established itself as one of the PlayStation Vita’s best games. More recently, Atlus announced Persona 5 is getting an English re-release with extra content via Persona 5 Royal. In fact, Persona 3 already had two re-releases shortly after its initial launch. First, Atlus released the epilogue-adding Persona 3 FES on PS2, followed by the PSP’s Persona 3 Portable – though the handheld’s limitations meant that version removed features along with the ones it added.

As beloved as the original Persona 3 is, 14 years of game design advancements have made some of its elements feel archaic. The first things a remake would need to add are quality-of-life improvements. Players would need the ability to fast-travel, the option of taking full control of the protagonist’s party members (a feature added in the portable Persona 3 port), and either more save points or simply unrestricted, in-menu saving. These would do a lot to modernize the game, but Persona 3’s PS2-era visuals also would need a face lift, complete with the crisp colors and high-quality anime cutscenes of Persona 5.

Besides adding fast-travel, most of the “day in the life” gameplay content – building ability-improving Social Links by hanging out with classmates – could go untouched. The ideal scenario would be a combination of Persona 3’s various releases, with the epilogue from Persona 3 FES, the female protagonist story from Persona 3 Portable, and the regular, 3D social gameplay from both FES and the original release. Persona 3’s combat portions, on the other hand, could use a major upgrade. With party control added, the battle system itself is totally adequate, consisting of classic turn-based JRPG combat. But the place where battling takes place needs some work.

Unlike subsequent games in the series, Persona 3 has only one dungeon: the 264-floored Tartarus. Players get a real sense of progression from grinding through the huge lair throughout the course of the game, but the Tartarus’ design is extremely boring. Each randomly-generated floor has little variation from the last, transitioning to a new visual style at only five points and differentiated floor-by-floor by only randomized layouts of simple corridors. A Persona 3 Remake would need to rework the Tartarus to add more visual and architectural variety. This variety should also extend to enemy design, replacing some of the many palette-swapped enemies with original ones.

While all of these changes could land a Persona 3 Remake among the best video game remakes and remasters, folks like Twitter user terri will have to continue calling for support from fellow Persona 3 fans until Atlus decides the time is right.
