What Consoles The Star Wars KOTOR Remake Is On

The fall 2021 PlayStation Showcase opened with a huge tease for the long-rumored Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake. Since then, Lucasfilm has confirmed which consoles the game will be launching on.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG first released in 2003. Developed by BioWare, KOTOR is set 4,000 years before the founding of the Galactic Empire and follows a Jedi traveling about the galaxy to defeat the Sith Lord Darth Malak. KOTOR later got a sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 – The Sith Lords, although this game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. The remake of KOTOR is being done by Aspyr Media in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

A follow-up post on the PlayStation Blog announced that the KOTOR remake will be a console exclusive for PlayStation 5 at launch. That wording leaves an opening for KOTOR to eventually come to other platforms such as Xbox Series X after a period of timed exclusivity on the PS5. Given that only the PS5 was listed, and not PS4, it seems unlikely the game will come to last-gen consoles. Lucasfilm Games did confirm the KOTOR remake will be coming to PC as well, giving players a second platform option.

Is Sony Phasing Out PlayStation 4 Releases?

The announcement of KOTOR as a PS5 exclusive comes at a time when Sony appears to be in the process of phasing out releases for the PlayStation 4. The company recently faced backlash after announcing that players would not be able to upgrade their PS4 copies of Horizon Forbidden West to PS5 versions for free. Sony later reversed its decision and confirmed the game would receive free PS5 upgrades, but that all other Sony exclusive games in the future would require a $10 fee to upgrade from PS4 to PS5. Although a few big titles like God of War Ragnarok have been confirmed for both PS4 and PS5, other games like Deathloop and Forspoken are opting for PS5 exclusivity.

While PS5 exclusives make sense as video games become more technologically demanding, it could be a source of frustration for players who are still finding it difficult to find a PS5. Toshiba recently announced it expects the semi-conductor chip shortage to last into 2022, meaning the PS5 and Xbox Series X shortage could continue in 2022. For now, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake doesn’t have a release date, so Star Wars fans awaiting the game have plenty of time to track down a console first.
