Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX has graphics meant to emulate a storybook, but there’s one Pokémon that didn’t turn out so hot. Poor Ekans, it seems, originated from the Uncanny Valley.

The world of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX evokes watercolors and stepping into a fantasy realm of delight. The game sort of succeeds in this, as visuals are pretty, but the limited number of animations per Pokémon can make characters’ movements feel a little stilted.

The Pokémon that has suffered the most from the strange animations in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is Ekans. This is one of the most iconic Pokémon of the Red & Blue era, due to it being one of the first creatures used by Team Rocket, and now… (via. @Lewchube on Twitter)

The Ekans of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is seemingly half-erect at all times, making it look as if it’s pretending to be Octodad – or as if it’s doing a contemptuous impression of a human being.

The reason for Ekan’s strange pose is likely due to composition. There are other Pokémon in the game that move around on their belly (like Slakoth,) so it’s not an issue of character design. This Ekans, in particular, is a member of Team Meanies, and it’s usually seen in the company of Gengar and Medicham. Ekan’s teammates are bipedal Pokémon, so it’s likely that the developers wanted to keep their height at the roughly the same level.

It would have made a lot more sense for Ekans to slither on the ground, then rise up when it stops. But as we’ve established, the developers only gave each Pokémon a limited number of animations, so Ekan’s movement was likely low on the priority list. Luckily for the players who don’t like this semi-hard Ekans, they have the chance to defeat it during one of the boss battles in the game.
