A Vikings sequel series, titled Vikings: Valhalla, will officially happen thanks to Netflix, and here’s everything you need to know about it. History Channel’s historical drama Vikings is preparing for its sixth and final season, but series creator Michael Hirst is all set to tell the stories of other notable Vikings through a sequel series. Vikings premiered in 2013 and initially followed the adventures of legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok, said to have been a descendant of Odin, and his Viking brothers from the start of the Viking Age onward.

As the series progressed, it focused more and more on Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys, making it possible for Hirst to end Ragnar’s arc in season 4. The final season of Vikings will see Ragnar’s sons Bjorn Ironside and Ivar the Boneless pitted against one another for the future of Norway, which will surely bring as much action, blood, and deaths as previous seasons. But Viking culture and mythology are very rich, and six seasons are just not enough to tell all the exciting adventures and stories there are about these characters.

In January, 2019, it was announced that Hirst and MGM Television were working on a Vikings spin-off series with Jeb Stuart on board as writer and executive producer, but not much was shared beyond that. After being at the center of a bidding war between three major streaming platforms, Netflix landed the series in a reportedly expensive deal. Here’s everything we know so far about the sequel series.

When The Vikings Sequel Will Release

What To Expect From The Vikings Sequel Show

Vikings: Valhalla doesn’t have a projected release date yet, and given that it’s still in early stages of development, it will probably be a while until fans of the main series get to know the new characters. The first ten episodes of Vikings season 6 will air between December 4, 2019 and February 5, 2020, with the second part arriving sometime in 2020. Following the pattern, Vikings: Valhalla could arrive in November-December 2021 or early 2022, unless they decide to give viewers a longer break between series.

What The Vikings Sequel’s Story Will Be

The sequel series won’t extend the arc of any of the characters currently in Vikings, and will focus instead in other (and bigger) legendary Viking figures. According to Deadline, Vikings: Valhalla will be set 100 years after the main series concludes and will introduce viewers to some of the most famous Vikings: Leif Erikson, Freydis Eiríksdóttir, Harald Hardrada, and the Norman King William the Conqueror, who was a Viking descendant.

Who Is In The Cast Of The Vikings Sequel

As mentioned above, Vikings: Valhalla is still in early development, so there are no details on who will join the cast just yet – and is it will be set many, many years after the events in Vikings season 6, fans shouldn’t expect to see any of the characters from the main series in the sequel (unless in a vision, which are not uncommon in the context of the series). It will be interesting to see how the adventures and legends of the characters in Vikings will influence those in Vikings: Valhalla, which will include as much action (and blood) as its predecessor.
