Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC is finally winding down, as after the Pyra and Mythra release just two fighter slots remain on SSBU’s Fighter’s Pass roster. While fans are already chomping at the bit to predict who gets added next, it’s almost impossible to predict who Nintendo will pull out of its bag at this point, so maybe the better question to ask is when will players get their next fighter reveal?
Regardless of who the last two fighters are, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will end its run of DLC with one of the most impressive fighting game rosters ever assembled. With over 70 characters available in the base game, and another 11 added as DLC over the span of the last couple of years, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster truly earns the Ultimate part of its title. What’s equally impressive, though, is the way that Nintendo has built hype for the new Smash DLC fighter releases, making each one feel like a true event. So, when can fans expect this excitement again?
While it’s impossible to predict the exact date Smash will get a new fighter, it’s easy to put forth a solid guess based on previous releases. A quick look at the blog posts on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate website shows that there is at least somewhat of a pattern to these character announcements. The second Smash DLC expansion pass kicked off with Min Min at the end of June of 2020, followed by Steve in October, Sephiroth in December, and Pyra/Mythra in March of this year.
This is certainly something of a loose pattern, but all of these characters have been released anywhere from two to four months apart from one another. Steve in October and Sephiroth in December were the closest reveals, but that could possibly have been due to Nintendo rushing Sephiroth to be ready for the Game Awards, which is where his surprising reveal trailer was debuted. Sephiroth being revealed at the Game Awards is also evidence in itself of when fans might get the next fighter reveal – at Nintendo’s E3 showcase.
Another Smash DLC Fighter Reveal At E3 2021 Seems Likely
E3 is set to begin on June 12th this year, which would mark just a little over 3 months from the Pyra/Mythra release. Not only does this fit within the established timeframe, but the reveal of a new Smash fighter at E3 makes sense for more obvious reasons as well. Nintendo has enthusiastically embraced the return of E3, and it’s widely expected that the company will have a large presence at the show. Nintendo is obviously going to want to excite their fans, and they’ve probably realized by now that few things get their fanbase as hyped as an unexpected Smash fighter reveal. Besides, if Nintendo thought the Game Awards was a large enough platform to warrant the Sephiroth announcement, then it would only make sense that they would want to utilize one of the largest video game showcases in the world for a new SSBU fighter reveal as well.
Despite all of this, if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has proven anything, it’s to always expect the unexpected with Nintendo. However, their release schedule with the most recent Fighter’s Pass has at least been somewhat regular, and the chance to reveal another fighter sometime during the run of E3 2021 just makes too much sense. Nintendo could always throw a curveball, but it seems safe to expect the next fighter reveal this summer.
