When Tom Clancys The Division Heartland Releases

With the announcement of a brand-new title, Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, Ubisoft continues to expand The Division franchise. The first game came out in 2016, taking place during a fictitious viral outbreak in New York City. The Division 2 followed three years later in 2019, changed the location to Washington DC, is still providing new content, and became even more popular than its predecessor. Now, The Division Heartland is looking to bring even more players into the series by going free-to-play on launch.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland does not yet have an exact release date. Ubisoft is aiming for 2021 or 2022, so late this year is conceivably the earliest it’ll come out. There are very few details on the game aside from it being free-to-play, but the title suggests another change in location. “Heartland” points to the next game in the series being somewhere in the Midwest United States. No gameplay information has been released yet, but Ubisoft claims Heartland “will provide an all new perspective” on the looter-shooter series.

The free-to-play route will likely succeed in bringing new players to The Division. Additionally, Ubisoft’s announcement says “Heartland is a standalone game that doesn’t require previous experience,” so the game will provide low barrier of entry into The Division universe. Heartland is going to be available on PC as well as Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

Heartland Isn’t the Only Division Universe Expansion

According to Ubisoft, more than 40 million players have set foot in The Division’s universe through one or both of the looter shooters. The success of the games has pushed Ubisoft to expand the franchise, including a film adaption of Tom Clancy’s The Division. The movie was announced around five years ago and will supposedly star Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, but it has gone through a couple director changes, the most recent of which was just two months ago.

There is also a The Division mobile game in the works, though details on that are even more scarce than for Heartland, with not even a release window given. A new novel set in the The Division’s universe is also on the way, and will tell a story that takes place after the events of The Division 2. There have already been a couple companion novels for the games which, despite bearing Tom Clancy’s name, are not based on any of the late author’s works. Before his death, however, Clancy did co-found Red Storm Entertainment, a game studio owned by Ubisoft that worked on both previous Division titles. Red Storm is the development team currently working on Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, and will likely reveal more about the free-to-play game, including its release date, later in the year.
