The Johto region was the ambitious follow-up to the Kanto region of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, and was intended to be the Pokémon game to end all Pokémon games until the series’ continued success prompted more games to be made.
Many of the Johto Pokémon are actually ideas that were left out from the original Gen I games due to space and/or time constraints, but some were made specially to fit Johto. If you’re someone who loves horoscopes and astrology, you may have already applied astrological signs to your favorite Pokémon, but here are Johto Pokémon for each of the 12 Zodiac signs.
12 Aries: Totodile
This Johto starter Pokémon is the most rambunctious and excitable of the trio, giving playful nips to its trainer that may end up causing serious injuries. Todotile is innocent but doesn’t know its own strength, leading it to hurt others unintentionally. This is already textbook Aries behavior, but add in Todotile’s bravery and curious nature and the evidence is undeniable.
11 Taurus: Espeon
Espeon being a Taurus is undoubtedly due to its perseverance and loyalty toward its trainer; if Espeon deems them worthy, it will use its precognitive powers to defend their trainer from any danger. Taurus folk are often benevolent, preferring to defend rather than attack and are dedicated to a sometimes-stubborn degree.
10 Gemini: Sudowoodo
The worst Gemini stereotype is their deceptiveness, perhaps stemming from the Twins two faces, hence the term”Two-faced.” Sudowoodo is literally known as the Imitation Pokémon, but this imitation is a protective mechanism, intended to camouflage itself from enemies. If people could see Geminis for their positive qualities rather than how they appear out of fear, their multifaceted nature would become known, such as Sudowoodo’s clear intelligence and charm.
9 Cancer: Blissey
Blissey is the epitome of Compassion, offering to heal any sick Pokémon it sees and sharing eggs of happiness with sad people it comes across. Cancers are often sensitive and gentle, possessing a strong sixth sense when it comes to emotion.
They are also dedicated to what they commit to, and anyone knows that Blissey is perseverant on the battlefield due to her healing and walling abilities. What other Pokémon could Cancer be?
8 Leo: Pichu
Pichu is quite famous, although not on the same level as its iconic evolution. Pichu is energetic and explorative, making a wonderful companion in games such as Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs. Leos are both enthusiastic about life and loyal in love, staying by their loved one’s side in even the worst of situations. Though they may frustrate others and even themselves at times, friendship is the best way to help a Leo (and to evolve a Pichu!)
7 Virgo: Suicune
Virgos are the helping kind, aiding those in need while looking effortlessly elegant. Suicune is the only choice here: a creature given a second life after a tragic end who helps others with compassion and grace.
Pokémon Sapphire’s Pokédex describes Suicune as embodying “the compassion of a pure spring of water,” a precious resource that it brings to the lands it roams. If that weren’t enough, Suicune is extremely strong, and having one on your team will get you through some tough battles.
6 Libra: Hitmontop
Hitmontop is just one in a long line of strong Fighting-type Pokémon across the Generations of Pokémon, but none are so perfectly balanced. Libra is the Scales, valuing justice, equity, aesthetic, and balance as its strongest traits. Not only does Hitmontop perfectly balance both its body, defense, and attack, but it pulls off elegant, fancy kick moves that may hypnotize its foe. Hitmontop does it all and looks beautiful doing it, too.
5 Scorpio: Umbreon
Scorpios have a reputation for being mysterious and complicated, perhaps even shadowy…which is why Umbreon is totally a Scorpio. This nocturnal creature has unrivaled intuition and intelligence, able to prowl through the dark of night and capture its foes. The only thing that could give it away is its excitement, causing the rings on its body to glow. The weaknesses of Scorpios are often obsession and extreme arrogance, something that trust and friendship can help combat.
4 Sagittarius: Skarmory
This sharp Steel-type embodies the great Sagittarius traits of being brave, lively, and rational. Many Sagittarius push themselves to be superior, and what is more superior than a steel bird who can fly over 180 miles per hour?
Like Sagittarius, Skarmory can be quite rash, evident in their territorial battles with Corviknights in Galar. They may not be perfect creatures, but seeing a Skarmory cut through the sky is a truly beautiful sight.
3 Capricorn: Houndoom
Capricorns do their best to excel in whatever they take on, a persistence that can be a blessing and a curse depending on the situation. As a species, Houndoom choose their leader by fighting each other, with the winner possessing the sharpest and curliest horns. Trying to stop this ritual is near impossible, as Capricorns can be exceptionally stubborn
Their dedication is admirable, but as a Pokémon known throughout history to have “the call of the grim reaper,” it is also seen with fear and suspicion. Capricorns may have trouble connecting emotionally or keeping a hold on their anger once it emerges.
2 Aquarius: Lanturn
This Electric and Water-type is a non-violent, independent creature, acting friendly to those it meets in its ocean. Calm, smart, and a practical fighter, Lanturn is the ideal Aquarius, offering friendship to the kind and a good fight to those who challenge it. In situations like this, the rebellious nature of an Aquarius can come out in full force, but often it is provoked first.
1 Pisces: Ampharos
Ampharos is a kind and good-tempered creature, unlike the usual nature of Electric-type Pokémon. Perhaps its dragon’s blood gives it patience and wisdom, but whatever the case, it’s a clear Pisces. In the Pokémon anime, Gym leader Jasmine’s Ampharos acts as the power source for Olivine’s Glitter Lighthouse, a noble role that it is dedicated to.
