The members of DC’s Suicide Squad are no strangers to wanton death, but how would they fare against one another in Netflix’s Squid Game? Unlike the average group of heroes, most of the Squad would likely be more than willing to participate in such a game! With violence for no good reason, high stakes, and an extremely unethical basis, Squid Game is perfect for Task Force X.

Squid Game is a series of six classic children’s games, each one testing a different aspect of the contestants’ skill sets. Upon entering, all players are dressed in jumpsuits, meaning that any armor, signature weapons, or magical items are not allowed in. With games requiring strength, intellect, dexterity, and combat prowess, there’s room for everyone to shine. However, all games must be played in order and failure in one round results in the player’s immediate execution. This means that characters have no guarantee of making it to a round in which they would excel. For example, while King Shark would certainly have the strength to win in round three’s tug-of-war, it’s unlikely that he would make it past round one’s “red light green light.”

In contrast to most comic book teams, the Suicide Squad is largely comedic and is home to dozens of laughably weak “throw-away” characters. The myriad of ways in which they can and will die in Squid Game is endless. However, the Squad has at one point or another housed some of DC’s most powerful villains and anti-heroes, such as Enchantress, Black Adam, and Poison Ivy. Due to the extensive and complicated history of the Squad, any character who was ever officially a member for any period of time will be considered in the competition.

Red Light Green Light

The opening round of Squid Game is the international classic, “red light green light.” Players must race to a finish line, moving only when the judge is facing away from them. If any movement is detected while the judge (in the show a giant, creepy robot doll) is looking, the contestant is executed. Although terribly suited for the rest of the game, the Clock King would be perfect for this game. With his impeccable sense of timing, he could breeze through this challenge, along with characters like Deadshot, Black Adam, and Bloodsport. However, many others would have a rough time making it through. For example, the likes of King Shark and Harley Quinn are simply too aggressive or crazy to have the self-control required for this game.

Honeycomb Headaches

The second round is a test of patience and dexterity. Contestants are each given a brittle circle of honeycomb candy, with a shape stamped in the middle. Each player must remove the excess candy, and reveal the shape using a sewing needle. If the shape breaks or the player fails to perform the task in under ten minutes, they are killed. Larger, bulkier characters like Killer Croc would have little to no chance of passing this round. However, similar to round one, the characters with great precision such as Deadshot and Deathstroke would have no problems here. More technological villains like Captain Cold, Polka-Dot Man, and Clock King, although gadgetless, would certainly have no issues in this round. Where precision lacks, magical abilities can often make up the difference for characters like Enchantress.

The End of Their Rope

For some of the Suicide Squad’s less physically inclined characters, round three’s tug-of-war spells disaster. Even though the Squad doesn’t have a whole lot of powerhouses like Black Adam, some are substantially weaker than even the average human. The competition is done in teams, however, the weaker characters would have no guarantee of passing if they had to rely on luck to have strong teammates. This means that characters like the Weasel or Ratcatcher likely don’t make the cut. Again, where power lacks, cheating is a great option! For example, Mind Boggler or Vertigo could offensively affect the other team’s ability to pull effectively.

A Lesson in Trickery

Round four assigns every player a partner, and a bag of ten marbles. The rules are simple: take all of your partner’s marbles without using violence. Any sort of game may be devised, and any form of non-violent trickery is acceptable. One player in the show actually manages to survive by cheating at a simple marble game. Although a player like Deadshot could easily win a game like marble shooting, there is no way that his partner would consent to that type of game, probably opting for something more random. This makes round four a game of manipulation and charisma moreso than skill. Characters like Mind Boggler and Poison Ivy have a great influence over people. Others such as Deathstroke are masters of strategy. One, however has a unique advantage. Parasite has the ability to absorb both the physical abilities, and the thoughts/memories of anyone he touches. This effectively makes him immune to manipulation, and gives him a pretty universal advantage, as he has access to essentially the entire Squad’s cache of powers.

Treading Lightly

Round five’s game is loosely based on balance games like “hopscotch.” However, players must instead hop across a bridge made of glass panes, some tempered and some brittle. Stepping on the wrong panes results in the player falling to their death. This game can be played under the assumption that flying or otherwise avoiding the panes is prohibited. Aside from obvious cop-out solutions like magical divination, there are few other ways to make it through this round. One character in the show is able to distinguish between the types of glass, and safely take the right path. Others had to rely on luck, and most of them perished. Very observant characters like Rick Flag and Deathstroke could likely discern between panes. This is another example of a game in which many would have a distinct advantage, but lacked the skills to make it this far. Someone with killer instincts and reflexes like Killer Croc might have the speed and intuition to make it across, but would lack the dexterity for round two.

Squid Game

The final game, more than anything, is a deathmatch. The original South Korean squid game begins with each player being assigned an offensive or defensive position. The attacker must race to a small circle within a squid-shaped court, and the defender must try to stop them and force them out of the boundaries. If either player dies, they lose, obviously. In the show, the players are given steak knives, and no violence-limiting rules are given. Although there are a few major candidates for a winner, one character in particular has the versatility required to make it all the way. The Parasite, while powerful in general, is actually given the potential for much greater power in a situation like Squid Game. His one power is to absorb the powers of others, and if pent up in a compound with dozens of other metahumans, there would be nothing stopping him from simply absorbing all of them. Under these conditions, even all of Belle Reve couldn’t stop the Parasite.

The Squid Squad Champion

Of all the Suicide Squad members, none could win Squid Game against a fully fueled Parasite. The fullest extent of his abilities are shown in The Man Of Steel #94, as he faces off against Superman and Strange Visitor. In essence, he has the ability to absorb the power of others, leaving his opponent drained, and retaining those powers for up to 24 hours. In this story, the heroic alien duo is only able to stop the Parasite because Strange Visitor has a similar power, and is able to take back the Parasite’s energy. However, without such a character present at the Squid Game compound, the Parasite would be unstoppable against all his Suicide Squad teammates.
