Disney+ dropped its first official trailer for Hawkeye and it raises the question why Clint Barton is training Kate Bishop instead of his daughter, Lila. Hawkeye premieres November 24th and is the next Disney+ series in Phase 4 of the MCU. The series will see Jeremy Renner return to his role as Hawkeye following the events of Avengers: Endgame and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova from Black Widow. Additionally, Hawkeye introduces audiences to Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop who comic book readers will know as a member of the Young Avengers.
Hawkeye’s first trailer provided audiences with their first glimpse of the highly anticipated series and revealed its fun holiday theme. Disney is clearly positioning this as a must-see holiday series and will likely incorporate many classic holiday movie elements. Moreover, Hawkeye will feature Clint fighting his way home to his family for Christmas with the help of Kate Bishop after his past catches up with him. This past will include Yelena seeking justice for Natasha’s death. There is consistently some danger standing between Clint and his beloved family.
Over the course of the series, Clint will take the want-to-be-hero, Kate, under his wing and further her “Hawkeye” training. This training will likely provide both comedic relief and incredibly fun action sequences as Kate discovers the full range of Hawkeye’s trick arrows. The focus on Clint’s family showcased throughout the trailer does, however, prompt a valid question: why is Clint training Kate Bishop and not his daughter? Consequently, the answer to this question is likely the most obvious. Clint cares so much for his family and would never consider placing his daughter in harm’s way.
Clint’s daughter, Lila Barton (Ava Russo), last appeared in Avengers: Endgame as a young teen looking to master archery with the help of her father. Therefore, Lila evidently possessed a desire to learn from her father and was interested in his alternate superhero life. However, Clint’s interest in teaching archery does not mean he would want his daughter chasing down dangerous criminals. After all that Clint and his family have been through, it stands to reason that Hawkeye would not train his daughter to potentially replace him in the Avengers. It’s clear Clint is attempting to put his past behind him.
Part of that past includes Clint Barton’s time as Ronin, which is also the identity he discovers Kate Bishop has resurrected. With or without him, Kate is determined to be a hero, and this is likely what ultimately convinces Clint to mentor the future Young Avenger. If Kate is going to continue down a perilous path, Clint will likely feel an obligation to ensure she doesn’t get herself killed in the process. Additionally, Kate’s pre-existing skills as the “world’s greatest archer” and real-life combat experience likely factor into Clint’s decision to train her as his potential replacement in the Avengers.
Clint’s choice to train Kate over his daughter, Lila, is undoubtedly a decision made out of love for his daughter. He has his priorities in order and the mantle of Hawkeye does not appear to be high on the list. This is why Kate Bishop and her enthusiasm for the job will receive training in Hawkeye. Clint will never feel as protective of Kate as he does his daughter, and therefore feels comfortable honing Kate’s skills in Hawkeye and potentially allowing her to adopt his callsign.
