Why Devilman Crybabys Run Looks So Weird

Here’s why Devilman Crybaby’s running animation for characters like Akira looks so weird. Devilman is a manga series created by Go Nagai and follows the adventures of a teenager named Akira who discovers demons exist. To fight back, he and his friend Ryo hatch a plan for Akira to merge with a demon named “Amon.” While Akira becomes a powerful demon dubbed Devilman, the story plays out in a famously tragic, apocalyptic fashion.

The manga has reminded a classic superhero/horror tale decades after it was first published. It has been adapted several times too, including an anime Devilman TV series, a trio of gory OVAs including 1987’s “The Birth” and the 2015 crossover Cyborg 009 VS Devilman. Like most manga/anime adaptations, Devilman hasn’t had much luck with live-action. Director Brian Yuzna (Society) once planned an English language adaptation in the 1990s that wasn’t ultimately produced, while a Japanese movie did arrive in 2004. Sadly, the film proved to be a crushing disappointment filled with terrible acting and poor special effects.

Faring much better with followers of the franchise was 2018’s Devilman Crybaby, which was a Netflix exclusive season. This fresh take stayed true to the source material – including THAT ending – but also updated it for a new generation. Despite tackling some timely issues, the show’s animation can still be incredibly stylized and over the top. There’s no better example than Akira’s running stance post-transformation, where he’s practically racing on all fours like a demon himself.

The Devilman Crybaby running gif soon found itself all over social media because of how bizarre and goofys it looks in motion. Of course, there’s an explanation within the story, which is to do with the many changes Devilman Crybaby’s Akira goes through. He goes from being a fairly meek teenager before merging with Amon to being far more aggressive and confident afterward. In fact, he was the slowest member of the track team to being the fastest in the aftermath. That’s because of the physical changes brought on by fusing with a demon, which also happens to fellow student Miki Kuroda later in the show.

Strangely, some viewers think the run wasn’t supposed to look as weird as it does, but while Devilman Crybaby can be dark and disturbing, it also knows when to inject some humor too. While the series was mostly well-received, a second series appears doubtful. It ends in a very definitive manner, and while the manga received follow-ups in the form of Violence Jack and Devil Lady, there don’t appear to be any more series planned.
