Why Pokémon Legends Arceus Website Is Being Broken By Hisuian Voltorb

Pokémon Legends: Arceus has had its official website broken by what appears to be Voltorb, in what seems to be a tease for a reveal of another Hisuian Pokémon variant. The upcoming action-adventure Pokémon game is looking to shake up the traditional formula and let players explore a semi-open world. Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in a bygone era of the Sinnoh region, in this time known as Hisui, and has been introducing new Hisuian Pokémon forms in the lead up to its expected January 28 release date.

The latest stunt seems to be hinting at an upcoming Hisuian Voltorb reveal, but it’s simultaneously rendering the game’s official website unreadable. The Pokémon Legends: Arceus home page quickly becomes inundated with Poké Balls. Ball Guy, a mascot that can be seen near Galar Pokémon League buildings, appears in the bottom corner of the screen and asks the user to help retrieve his lost Poké Balls. Clicking on the steam-powered Legends: Arceus Poké Balls will cause them to disappear, but eventually, one will go supernova and reset the entire process.

The most plausible explanation for the Pokémon Legends: Arceus website’s new mini-game is that the exploding Poké Ball is actually a Voltorb (or its evolution, Electrode), a Pokémon that famously looks just like a Poké Ball with its red top and white bottom halves, and also explodes. The official Pokémon Twitter account even tweeted from the perspective of Ball Guy, urging fans to help him retrieve his dropped Poké Balls. There doesn’t appear to be any way to actually succeed in the mini-game. Clicking on the Great and Heavy Balls won’t trigger the explosion (likely since they don’t resemble Voltorb), but it seems impossible to get through more than a handful of the classic red and white ones before the screen resets.

Voltorb Joins Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Weird Marketing

The only thing users can do is click the “Reduce Motion” option near the top of the screen, which will disable the entire ordeal along with the website’s other moving parts. Completely eliminating the effective use of the game’s website is an odd marketing strategy, but it joins an equally odd list of other promotional materials. New evolutions with a dark origin story were revealed, and there was even a creepy found footage trailer leading to an announcement of more Hisuian variants. The weirdest part about the found footage trailer was the unexplained presence of a video camera in a setting that everywhere else seems to be pre-industrial, though the game will also give players a smartphone-like device.

If this mini-game is in fact teasing a new form, Hisuian Voltorb and Electrode will likely be revealed relatively soon. The aforementioned found footage trailer only remained a mystery for a couple of days before Professor Oak restored the footage in-universe and provided fans with the full trailer. Pokémon Legends: Arceus may take place before any other game in the series, but it’s still giving fans plenty of new Pokémon variants and evolutions to get excited for, even if some are being revealed in bizarre ways.
