Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Here’s why Rey was in possession of BB-8 at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The epic saga gave its latest heroine one last mission as she traveled to Tatooine. She was alone except for BB-8, the beloved droid first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rey, however, was not the owner of BB-8 and it may have been unclear why she had the droid.

The astromech droid known as BB-8 belonged to Poe Dameron, a skilled pilot who emerged as a hero in the Resistance’s efforts against the First Order. BB-8 often accompanied Poe during missions on his X-wing fighter, serving as his co-pilot. In The Force Awakens, BB-8 became aligned with Rey and Finn, having a notable admiration for the former. The sphere droid was an integral member of the Resistance by using its tools and skills to save his friends in crucial situations.

When Rey, Poe, and Finn went on a mission to find the Sith Wayfinder, BB-8 was one of the droids who came along on the journey. The droid was also present during the Battle of Exegol when Rey transmitted the coordinates so the Resistance could confront Emperor Palpatine’s fleet. BB-8 could be seen assisting Finn and Jannah on the ground while Poe and the other pilots fought from above. After the major victory, Rey brought Luke and Leia’s lightsabers to Tatooine and buried them at the Lars homestead before walking off into the twin sunsets, almost mirroring the imagery used for to promote the scene on Jakku. BB-8’s presence alongside Rey was significant for a number of reasons.

Rey’s Possession Of BB-8 Was Symbolic To The Final Chapter Of The Trilogy

Why Rey Has BB8 At The End of Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker

BB-8 was one of a handful of new characters to make their Star Wars debut in the sequel trilogy. Poe gave BB-8 the map revealing the whereabouts to Luke Skywalker before the pilot was captured by the First Order. The droid was also taken hostage on Jakku by a scavenger before being rescued by Rey. BB-8 then stood by Rey’s side, trusting her for the duration of the trilogy. The fact that the droid was once again with its rescuer after a series of tumultuous events served as a symbolic full-circle moment. They were back on a desert planet but this time, they were in control of their own destiny as they faced the binary sunset.

Other Reasons For Why Rey Had BB-8 At The End Of The Rise Of Skywalker

It’s no question that Rey and BB-8 shared a special bond. Whenever they were separated for a period of time, Rey would be shown taking time to reunite with BB-8, commenting on its new look or embracing the robot as if it was a pet. The droid may have belonged to Poe, but he was well aware that his Resistance allies would take care of the droid, especially Rey. Poe also acknowledged BB-8’s usefulness in other areas of the Resistance.

When Poe piloted an X-wing during the fight on Exegol, R2-D2 served as his co-pilot. This gave R2 one last sendoff in the Skywalker Saga by allowing the droid to take part in a deciding battle. In turn, BB-8’s presence during the final scene with Rey gave the film a chance to honor the newer generation of characters. With Poe acting as the General of the Resistance following Leia’s death, he may have given Rey the responsibility of watching over BB-8. Either way, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker proved that BB-8 will always be in good hands.
