The number of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man 3 will actually help Tom Holland’s Peter Parker stand out even more. It was recently reported that Charlie Cox is rumored to reprise his role as Daredevil in the upcoming movie. He would join an expanding cast that reportedly now includes Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as their Spider-Men iterations, as well as Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey. On top of that, Alfred Molina will be back as Doc Ock in addition to Jamie Foxx as Electro, leading to a stacked cast that should be a Spider-Man enthusiast’s dream. However, a number of fans are worried that with so many characters, Holland’s Peter Parker will be forced to take a backseat.

It’s entirely possible, even likely, this fear is unfounded. At the very least, it’s premature. Right now, there’s no way to know if these will be substantial roles or mere cameos. It honestly could go either way. That being said, it’s been clear for over a year now that Marvel and Sony were building up to a Sinister Six movie and within the last few months, a cross-studio multiverse. Even if there are bigger supporting roles for the older characters, it doesn’t mean Holland will be sidelined. Fans need to remember just one thing: a key “Spider-Verse” comic book arc.

In January 2013, then-writer Dan Slott launched the Superior Spider-Man run, where villain Doc Ock switched his consciousness with Peter Parker’s. He destroyed Spider-Man’s good name while Peter was trapped as a bodiless spirit, helpless to do anything as he watched his legacy being destroyed. Fans hated the story at first, but by the end, they came around to recognizing its excellence. This is because Superior Spider-Man showed what Spider-Man would be like without his bedrock sense of moral responsibility. This only served to remind readers Peter is a special character. That point was further driven home after Peter regained his body through comic book shenanigans, and that Spider-Man run led into the “Spider-Verse” arc. That arc, also written by Slott, introduced the concept of a multiverse with dozens of Spider-people and alternate versions of Peter Parker.

Again, as fans tend to do, they questioned whether or not the story would work. They wondered whether the new Spider-people meant the Peter Parker they knew and loved was no longer special. They were also worried about who the “real” Spider-Man was. Again, as writers tend to do, Slott answered all of those questions in the pages of the comic book. When the Spider-people of various Earths gathered together to fight, they realized they needed a leader. Peter reluctantly stepped up, knowing it was the right thing to do, and Otto Octavius, as the Superior Spider-Man, challenged him for supremacy. What follows is a fight for the ages, with Peter Parker ultimately reigning supreme, not because he was ruthless, but because he was compassionate. “And that’s why I’m in charge,” he tells a prone Superior Spider-Man as Otto lays on the ground.

If done correctly, Marvel could use this template to make Holland’s version of Spider-Man shine even brighter. Marvel has long had a habit of loosely adapting their comic book stories, not so much in plot, but in spirit and theme. On a practical level, Marvel and Sony know Holland is their star. They’re not going to sideline him. But on a narrative level, there’s plenty of room here, even with a large number of characters, for Holland’s Peter to set himself apart from the rest. Audiences will find out next year when the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 hits theaters.
