Spider-Man: No Way Home’s first teaser dethrones Avengers: Endgame as the most-watched trailer in its first 24 hours — how did it do that? Marvel Studios and Sony officially revealed the much-clamored first look at the threequel during CinemaCon, signaling the start of its marketing period. Directed by Jon Watts, the blockbuster will be his third time collaborating with Tom Holland after Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Clocking in at almost three minutes, the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer offers a good idea of what to expect from the movie. It uses Spider-Man: Far From Home’s mid-credits scene as the jumping point for its story. Following Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) dying confession that not only outed the wall-crawler’s identity but also indicted him as the culprit behind the villain’s death, Peter Parker’s life is turned upside down. Between the increasing scrutiny from the public and the struggle to prove his innocence, he reaches out to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the hopes of being able to find a solution to all his problems. But while the sorcerer was eager to help, their attempts to rectify the situation, unfortunately, only made it worse.

Aside from its unusually long runtime and Alfred Molina’s return as Doc Ock, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer looks like a typical comic book movie teaser — at least on the surface. Yet, it was able to topple Avengers: Endgame as the most-watched trailer in its first 24 hours, garnering over 355.5 million global views compared to the 2019 blockbuster’s 289 million. It also became the most talked-about trailer ever with over 4.5 million mentions, easily eclipsing Endgame’s 1.94 million. This is all the more impressive considering that Endgame was an event movie, featuring almost all MCU characters. Not only was it the end of the Infinity Saga, but it was set up by Avengers: Infinity War’s cliffhanger as well. In comparison, Spider-Man: No Way Home, despite Doctor Strange’s appearance in the trailer, is still a solo movie. So, how exactly was it able to garner this much interest? There are several reasons that contributed to what seems like a perfect storm for the threequel. For starters, there was already massive anticipation for Spider-Man: No Way Home; for months, fans have been clamoring for any official marketing material for the movie as it’s known that principal photography was already done, but Marvel Studios and Sony held out.

During this time, various rumors came out, feeding people’s interest despite barely having any official information about the blockbuster. There were speculations that despite a different set-up from Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be some sort of live-action Spider-Verse adaptation, with both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire set to return. This bit in itself was pivotal as it allowed the threequel to pique the interest of those who were fans of previous Spider-Man franchises. While the studios remained mum, the trades come out with additional information that backs up the rumors, including the return of Jamie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios was also indirectly providing more hints that Spider-Man: No Way Home is going down this narrative route, with the MCU’s multiverse being established. So even if they continued to hold out on its marketing, shows like WandaVision and Loki set up future MCU movies and shows like Spider-Man: No Way Home, and what can be expected from it.

Then, the teaser leak happened. Granted that it wasn’t ideal, it may have even further hyped up fans about the official version. It helped that the public had an idea when the official footage was going to debut and many were already on the lookout. So when it dropped, everyone — even those who saw the bootleg version, immediately checked it out. Finally, the fact that there’s a lot to dissect in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, it was almost imperative to watch it repeatedly in order to spot all the hidden details including clues about Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. Combine all these factors and now, it makes more sense that the upcoming MCU threequel was able to beat Avengers: Endgame’s record.
