Teen dramas and Disney animated features have a surprisingly large amount in common. After all, they do mostly center on teenagers trying to figure out their place in the world. Dawson’s Creek might not have featured princesses and magical villains, but it did have plenty of rogues, heroic actions, bold statements, and young women setting out on adventures across its five seasons of episodes.

Not every person in Dawson’s Creek would correlate to a Disney princess or prince. It is, however, easier than fans might initially think to draw parallels between characters from the different properties and figure out just who the Disney animated counterparts of the fictional Capeside residents are.

10 Jen: Esmeralda

Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame is often misunderstood by those around her. She’s seen as another pretty face, but she’s got a good heart, and she’s a champion of outcasts in society. She and Jen definitely understand one another.

When Jen moves to Capeside from New York, she’s got a bit of a past. There’s a perception of her from other girls in school that isn’t quite right as they expect her to be a partier. Instead, Jen wants a fresh start and she doesn’t take too kindly to classmates judging one another prematurely.

9 Jack: Aladdin

This might seem like a surprising comparison at first. After all, Aladdin grows up on the street, stealing to survive. Jack is from a pretty wealthy family. They’re more alike than fans think.

Aladdin longs for a different life, and when he gets the chance to have it, he changes everything about himself to the outside world. Only those closest to him get to see the real him. Jack takes a similar arc as he struggles to fit in high school before coming out, and then in college when he wants to be more than just the one gay guy in his frat. Jack eventually becomes comfortable with who he is thanks to a little help from his best friend.

8 Andie: Belle

Like Aladdin, Belle also longs to experience life outside of the world she knows. While Belle is busy helping her father, Andie is kept close by her father as a way to control and monitor her mental health.

Both young women absorb knowledge like a sponge. Belle reads everything she can and Andie pushes herself as hard as possible in school. When Belle has the chance to experience an adventure by saving her father, she jumps at it. Likewise, Andie embraces wild nights and new relationships as a way to get out of her comfort zone, though it takes her a while to get there.

7 Audrey: Tinker Bell

Tinker Bell is the most loyal friend Peter Pan has. She would do anything for him – until he neglects her in favor of his new friends. Audrey knows a thing or two about that.

Audrey is someone who throws herself all in with relationships. She tries very hard to befriend Joey and fit into her world when the show introduces her during their freshman year of college, and she becomes one of Joey’s closest friends. In fact, she becomes a major part of Joey’s friend group – dating Pacey and appearing in Dawson’s movie. Of course, the moment she starts to feel on the outside looking in with all of her friends, she slips into bad habits and self-medication, giving in to her anger and jealousy.

6 Grams: Phil

In Hercules, the titular demigod needs a little help following his hero’s journey. He enlists Phil to train him. Initially, Phil is strict and pretty rough on his charge. He just wants what’s best for Hercules, but he doesn’t know how to show it.

That’s very much Grams in Dawson’s Creek. Jen’s grandmother is very hard on Jen, trying to keep her from making the same mistakes again. It takes nearly two seasons for the family members to begin understanding one another. Grams eventually becomes one of Jen’s greatest champions and confidantes and Jen grows to understand her grandmother’s point of view.

5 Abby: Jafar

Jafar is power-hungry. Unhappy with his position in life, he wants nothing more than to cause chaos for those he doesn’t like and to control those he considers beneath him. Abby might not have magic on her side or be the advisor to a sultan, but she and Jafar have the same mindset.

She hates her small-town life so much that Abby does her best to make her classmates miserable as well. Causing chaos and leaving broken hearts in her wake is what she does instead of hypnotizing people with a magic staff.

4 Bessie: Cinderella

Thanks to circumstances outside of her control, Cinderella ends up stuck in a life where she works harder than everyone else around her. With her parents gone, she’s stuck taking care of her stepsisters until she finally gets a break in the form of a fairy godmother and a handsome prince.

Bessie isn’t stuck in exactly the same circumstances as Cinderella, but she is just as hard-working and determined. She raises Joey after their mother dies and their father ends up in prison. Bessie doesn’t have a fairy godmother, but with the help of her little sister, she does achieve her dream of opening a bed and breakfast.

3 Pacey: Flynn Rider

Classic Disney stories had noble princes that the audience didn’t get to know much about. Modern Disney animation has made a change, giving the audience lovable rogues like Flynn Rider. Flynn is the persona he adopts. Eugene has big dreams, and he’s not afraid to use charm and plenty of breaking the rules to achieve them.

Pacey is Flynn – or Eugene. He’s the class clown growing up, always bringing attention to himself since parents don’t give him the kind of attention he wants. Pacey isn’t a two-dimensional clown, however. He feels things deeply, making him the best friend anyone will ever have. Pacey also falls hard when he falls in love, always putting the other person before himself, just as Eugene cuts Rapunzel’s hair rather than allow her to remain trapped as a result of using her magic to save him.

2 Joey: Rapunzel

Joey’s penchant for pessimism and sarcasm might make Rapunzel seem like an odd choice for her Disney character, but she actually has a lot in common with the princess locked in a tower. Rapunzel lives a very sheltered life, stuck in a very specific bubble. She expresses herself in all the ways she can in her tower, but it’s not until Flynn Rider breaks her out that she truly starts to live.

Joey very much sees Capeside as a cage she might not be able to find her way out of. As a result, she pushes herself into every academic and creative pursuit that Capeside has to offer in a bid to find her way to a good college. It’s not until she and Pacey start spending more time together, however, that Joey really starts taking risks and allowing herself to experience life instead of just getting through it. Likewise, Joey also helps Pacey believe in himself.

1 Dawson: Peter Pan

Dawson might be the easiest character to find a Disney counterpart for. Joey, after all, often reminds Dawson that he has “Peter Pan syndrome.” Peter, a boy who never has to grow up, follows his life from one naive adventure to the next, always the hero in his own story, though he neglects the people he brings to Neverland in the process.

Dawson might not have pixie dust or get in fights on pirate ships, but he does see the world as a grand adventure. He wants life to play out like it does in the movies, and his world is so narrowly focused on his own story playing out that he often forgets that his friends have their own lives.
