Why The Suicide Squad Reviews Are So Positive

So far, The Suicide Squad’s reviews have been incredibly positive, with critics mostly loving James Gunn’s DCEU movie and it hitting a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following on from 2016’s Suicide Squad, Gunn’s movie is neither full reboot nor a complete sequel, but instead its own unique thing that just so happens to have some returning character and actors. Its story and characters aside, one key way The Suicide Squad has differentiated itself from its successor- and many other DC movies – is with its reviews.

Although things have started to turn around, WB’s shared DC universe has suffered from a rather negative critical reception, in particular for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (28% on Rotten Tomatoes), Suicide Squad (26%), and Justice League (40%). There are certainly some variables in there, with audiences have different levels of appreciation for the movies, the latter two being damaged by studio interference, and more besides. But in terms of its reviews, The Suicide Squad fits more with the likes of Wonder Woman (93%) and Shazam! (90%).

Even there, though, The Suicide Squad is a cut above. At the time of writing, Gunn’s movie holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 111 reviews, of which only four are considered “rotten”. That’s an impressive tally for any superhero movie, not just the DCEU – the only superhero movie with a higher Rotten Tomatoes rating currently is the widely-loved Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which sits on 97%. The reviews speak to Gunn’s abilities as a writer and director, capable of crafting a big action movie that juggles an array of weird and wonderful characters, boasts a lot of humor, and also plenty of heart. Here’s what some of the positive The Suicide Squad reviews are saying:

Screen Rant:

“The Suicide Squad, from the mind of James Gunn, is both wickedly entertaining and shamelessly depraved fun set in the DC movie world… [It] really showcases Gunn’s stylistic and comedic flair that is expertly balanced with R-rated action and horror.”

CBR:

“Gunn, reteaming with cinematographer Henry Braham (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), creates a visually impressive film, with an eye for action and an even better one for comedy. The film is unabashedly silly, gory, and weird.”

AV Club:

“In many ways, the gleefully profane, anything-goes mayhem of The Suicide Squad feels like a mega-budget version of the Troma Studios productions that gave Gunn his start. And thank goodness for that.”

Perri Nemiroff:

“One of the franchise’s biggest, bloodiest and most bizarre movies yet – and also one of its best.”

LA Times:

“Gunn’s insouciant swagger isn’t entirely devoid of warmth or sentimentality, and the bonds of kinship that emerge between comrades — warm little cracks in the movie’s nihilistic facade — can’t help but sneak their way into your own affections.”

USA Today:

“Embraces a superhero vibe (even chock-full of morally questionable rogues hoping the government doesn’t blow their heads off) and adds elements of workplace comedy, gritty war movie, dysfunctional family drama and kaiju disaster flick.”

Nerdist:

“The Suicide Squad might be the kindest superhero film ever made. Sure, it’s about criminals forced into life-threatening missions at the promise of freedom and the threat of death. But under all that ultra violence lies something far sweeter.”

It’s clear from The Suicide Squad reviews that its an incredibly entertaining action-comedy, but what also stands out is Gunn’s use of horror elements and gore. That taps into his Troma roots in a way Guardians of the Galaxy never really did (or could, because it’s designed to be more family friendly). Essentially, this is Gunn fully unleashed, able to do just about anything he wants, which results in plenty of mayhem, carnage, and a movie that delivers on its billing. At the same time, though, Gunn finds a necessary balance: The Suicide Squad wouldn’t work if he didn’t make audiences care about the characters and, like he did with Guardians, Gunn imbues The Suicide Squad’s band of oddballs and misfits with enough charm and heart that there’s a sweetness to the movie too, as noted by several reviews. Still, not every review for The Suicide Squad is positive – here are some of the more negative takes:

Little White Lies:

“Not a single gag lands and most of them offend. This might actually be worse than the first one.”

Irish Independent:

“Though not to be confused with the 2016 action caper Suicide Squad, James Gunn’s noisy sequel aims for a similar style and tone — trashy and unpleasant. In this, and this alone, it succeeds.”

iNews:

“The Guardians of the Galaxy-style goofiness mixed in with lingering shots of maimed lasagne-like innards feels queasy and all wrong; it’s like someone exposing themselves at a wedding.”

Even some of the positive reviews note that not everything in Gunn’s movie works – which is to be expected when it has so many different characters, and throws so much at the screen. That’s then particularly reflected in the negative reviews, which criticize the film for being offensive and unpleasant. Mileage will invariably vary on that front, but this is an incredibly gory film, with Gunn holding nothing back as bodies are torn in half and heads explode. It’s also a fairly juvenile one at times, as evidenced by the dick jokes seen in the trailer (and there are plenty more of its ilk in the film).

All of that means it inevitably won’t be for everyone, but generally this is an extremely well-made blockbuster: with huge set-pieces, compelling, colorful characters, an entertaining story, and a layer of emotion underneath it all. It isn’t a perfect movie by any means, but it’s easy to see why most of The Suicide Squad’s reviews are so positive.
