The Witcher Netflix series has its faults, but the author of the novels has promised that it won’t repeat one of the biggest mistakes made by Game of Thrones, as Ed Sheeran will never sing in the show.
Game of Thrones had a lot of terrible moments in its later seasons, but few scenes were as awful as the Ed Sheeran cameo in “Dragonstone.” Arya encounters a group of Lannister soldiers while traveling south and she sits with them while they make camp. One of the soldiers was played by singer Ed Sheeran, who sang “Hands of Gold” (a song from the A Song of Ice and Fire novels) on the show.
The response from the fans was vitriolic, to say the least. There had been many celebrity cameos in Game of Thrones in the past, including ones involving singing, as the band Sigur Rós sang to Joffrey during the Purple Wedding. Despite this, many fans of the show complained about the blatant Ed Sheeran cameo, due to its prominence in the episode in comparison to other cameos. The hatred towards Sheeran was misguided, as it was actually the fault of the showrunners and Maisie Williams, as the latter was a huge Ed Sheeran fan.
It seems that there won’t be one conspicuously ginger bard roaming Novigrad in the future seasons of The Witcher, as the creator of the novels will prevent any Ed Sheeran cameos on the show. Andrzej Sapkowski is the author of The Witcher books and he serves as a creative consultant on The Witcher TV show. According to Comic Book, Sapkowski talked about his role on The Witcher during the 2018 Warsaw Comic Con and he mentioned the one thing that he will ensure will never happen on the show.
“I believe that my job as a creative consultant for this series is to make sure that at NO point in the show [will] Ed Sheeran sing. And that I will make sure doesn’t happen. I will make sure.”
One of the many reasons fans loved Game of Thrones was that its fantasy setting allowed it to avoid elements that would age the show, such as obnoxious celebrity cameos or product placements. The Ed Sheeran cameo was seen as one more example of the show’s decline in quality, with many fans comparing it to a cameo from a YouTube celebrity or one of the Minions. Time has been a bit kinder to the Ed Sheeran cameo, but only because of the events of the final season, which somehow managed to be so bad that they retroactively soured a lot of the opinions of the good seasons of the show.
The first season of The Witcher has received mixed reviews but it has drawn in huge viewership numbers for Netflix. It’s possible that the increasing popularity of the franchise might lead to celebrities and musicians wanting to appear on the show. It remains to be seen if Sapkowski has enough clout to keep bad cameos out of The Witcher.
