A new trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 offers a closer look at how Diana Prince can soar through the skies. Following the hugely successful 2017 Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot as the titular Amazonian, Patty Jenkins is returning to the DCEU with Wonder Woman 1984. Set decades after the original in an age of hair metal and neon spandex, Diana leads the typical double life of a superhero – a regular woman studying Earth’s history, and the powerful Amazonian protector of humanity known as Wonder Woman. The sequel begins with Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord making dreams come true. Steve Trevor is brought back to life following his death in World War I, and Diana’s friend Barbara is transformed into the villainous Cheetah.
A previous Wonder Woman 1984 trailer revealed Kristen Wiig’s full Cheetah design, debuted Diana’s golden eagle armor, and showcased Steve Trevor’s razor-sharp 1980s fashion sense. However, the footage also included a scene where Diana swings across a stormy sky, riding the lightning by Tarzan-ing from the bolts using her lasso of truth. Witnessing Wonder Woman travel in such fashion is intriguing, since the ability is not usually attributed to the Amazonian princess, particularly within the DCEU. A brand new trailer dropped alongside the announcement that Wonder Woman 1984 would release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, and sheds more light on Diana’s new power of flight.
In the opening seconds of the latest Wonder Woman 1984 trailer, Diana is seen running through Washington D.C. at speed, before launching her lasso upwards and whipping herself into the air. Unlike the lightning shot glimpsed previously, the Washington scene takes place on a beautifully sunny day, with no lightning forks for Diana to swing from. This proves that Diana Prince’s ability to fly isn’t merely dependent on bad weather, but rather she’s discovered a new way of utilizing her famous lasso.
While swinging from lightning isn’t a familiar trait of DC’s foremost heroine, the shot could’ve been attributed to Diana’s status as an illegitimate daughter of Zeus. Diana has physically grabbed or lassoed thunderbolts on a few select occasions in the DC comics, and her unique biology might’ve explained the impressive feat. Now, it seems Diana’s flight is based more on her Silver Age-era power to ride air currents. Although certain incarnations of Wonder Woman have been able to fly as easily as Superman, the 1950s saw Diana glide natural updrafts to give the impression of flying. As well as the lightning swinging and lasso throwing seen in trailers, on-set images have revealed Gal Gadot gliding along the streets of Washington DC in midair. While some initially thought this might’ve signaled the arrival of Wonder Woman’s iconic Invisible Jet, the scene might’ve actually depicted Diana’s new flight ability.
Alternatively, Diana might be using the lasso to enhance her natural leaping in Wonder Woman 1984. The closest the Amazonian has come to flying in her DCEU career thus far is just leaping really, really far. Judging from the footage in the latest trailer, Diana might be using the momentum and power of her lasso to propel through the air, similar to how Thor uses Mjolnir in the MCU. And as a bonus, she can go higher and further on a stormy day thanks to her old man’s thunder. Wonder Woman does have to be careful not to wildly alter Diana Prince’s powers, however, as the superhero’s appearances in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League fall chronologically later than the 1980s.
