World of Warcraft: Shadowlands changes up the post-game grind in several ways from Battle for Azeroth. While reputation and mythic dungeons are still the main focus for power progression, Renown is a new system that players will need to engage with in order to progress their covenant campaign and unlock new items and abilities. Here is everything you need to know about Renown.

Once you’ve reached level 60 and completed the Shadowlands campaign, you’ll need to choose a covenant. Choosing a covenant begins the covenant campaign. After an introductory mission, you’ll be given a quest that rewards one Renown.

Simply put, each Renown you earn increases your Renown level by one up to a maximum of 40. Renown levels unlock a wide variety of useful things, including soulbinds, adventure companions, new covenant campaign missions, improved gear from World Quests, and much, much more. The specific rewards and the levels at which they are unlocked changes from covenant to covenant. You can check your covenants reward track by clicking on the Covenant Sanctum button on your mini-map and then clicking Renown.

Starting in week one of Shadowlands, only three levels of Renown are available per character each week. However, if you fall behind from week to week there is a catch-up mechanic already in place. If you miss Renown one week you can still earn it by completing dungeons, raid, PvP, and Callings until you catch up to the current level cap.

Each week, the three available Renown levels can be earned in three different ways:

  • Complete the “Replenish The Reservoir” quest by depositing Anima into your sanctum
  • Complete the “Return Lost Souls” quest by entering The Maw and rescuing Tormented Souls
  • Complete the next available chapter of your Covenant Campaign

Head to your Sanctum each week to collect the “Replenish The Reservoir” and “Return Lost Souls” quests. To collect the required anima, simply complete World Quests in any of the four realms that reward anima, or kill and loot rares. To collect the Tormented Souls, head to The Maw and open any cages you find that have a soul trapped inside. You can also collect Tormented Souls by killing rares.

Because the Covenant Campaign chapters unlock at specific intervals, you’ll need to complete both weekly quests before the Covenant Campaigns unlock. Each Covenant Campaign will have a different requirement. There are eight covenant quests in total.

Raising your Renown is just one of many systems you’ll need to keep up with as you play World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Luckily, many of the systems overlap quite nicely. While you’re out completing World Quests to earn your anima, make sure you complete the ones the reward Reputation as well. Reputation is a long term grind that takes more players several months to complete. While you’re in the Maw collection Tormented Souls, make sure you’re collecting as much Stygia as you can so you can purchase some upgrades for Torghast, Tower of the Damned. There’s a lot to do every week in Shadowlands, but Renown should be your top priority.
