It has now been a full year since the new generation of consoles launched. The perfect time to stop and reflect for a second on how each has performed during that period. We already know the PS5 has sold 13.4 million units and counting. We also know the Nintendo Switch continues to perform well, and that it will likely surpass 100 million consoles shipped and the lifetime sales of the Wii at some point in 2022.

Data collated by Ampere has revealed something interesting about the Xbox Series’ first year, or rather its first 11 months as the data is correct as of September 30, 2021. Those numbers show the Series S is outselling the Series X in a number of key markets. The consoles combined had sold 6.7 million units by the end of September, although it’s unclear which console has the edge overall.

Both Xbox and PlayStation launched digital-only versions of their latest consoles. However, while the digital PS5 is simply a regular one without a disc drive, the Series S is an entirely different console. It looks different, it’s a lot smaller than a Series X, and perhaps most importantly of all, it is by far the cheapest option of all the next-gen consoles on the market. While it is less powerful than its bigger sibling, at $300 it costs the same as a Switch in the US.

It also appears to be the most readily available of all the next-gen consoles. While PS5s and Series X consoles remain almost impossible to find a year on from launch, the Series S is usually available. Xbox boss Phil Spencer even admitted in the past that he expects the less powerful console to outsell the Series X over the course of this next generation. It would appear that prediction is coming true sooner than Spencer might have thought.

There’s a very real chance the Series S continues to flex on the Series X in the coming months. Odds are parents all over the world are frantically trying to find new consoles for their kids in time for the holidays as you read this. If the Series S is the only one available, and costs less than the others, then it will be the one most people pick. That’s also why the Switch’s sales will probably experience a spike over the course of the next month too, especially following the launch of the OLED model.
