Cyclops is traditionally the leader of the X-Men in the movies, at least in the field. Comic book fans know his role in the group is much more complicated than that. Scott Summers has seen lots of ups and downs since his debut in X-Men #1 in 1963, many of which have yet to translate to the screen.

Cyclops has been at the center of most of the major events of the X-Men since their beginning, and he is connected to the larger Marvel Universe in complex and intriguing ways that aren’t obvious to anyone but the most steadfast comic book readers. His larger comic history may provide some clues for his eventual MCU adaptation.

10 He Has A Secret Fourth Brother

Cyclops’ family tree is very complicated. In addition to his brother Alex Summers, the mutant Havok, they have another brother Vulcan. It was recently revealed there is a fourth Summers brother, Adam-X, a product of the extreme era of the 1990s. Adam-X was teased as a potential Summers back then but never shown to be before he fell out of favor. The recent X-Men Legends comic series finally brought that story to life, revealing his connection to the Summers within mainstream Marvel continuity.

9 He Fought Storm For Leadership Of The X-Men

Cyclops is traditionally the leader of the X-Men in the field, but he hasn’t been the only one. He once fought Storm for the privilege of leading the group in one of the most dynamic battles between X-Men. After some time away from the team, Cyclops returns and challenges Storm to effectively a duel in the Danger Room in Uncanny X-Men #201. Even without her powers, which had been recently stripped from her, Storm wins and secures her place in the hierarchy of the X-Men for all time.

8 He Married A Clone Of Jean Grey

A Marvel Comics couple likely to only ever exist in the comics is Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor. After Jean Grey died at the end of The Dark Phoenix Saga, Cyclops surprised the X-Men by meeting and marrying Madelyne, who looked just like Jean. That would turn out to be more than a coincidence as she was later revealed to be a clone of Jean Grey created by Mr. Sinister. Their marriage would end in disaster, with Madelyne becoming the Goblin Queen and eventually dying in the Inferno crossover event from the late ’80s.

7 He Killed Professor X

Scott Summers’ behavior in his marriage to Madelyne might not have been the best. He certainly wasn’t on his best behavior when he killed Professor X at the end of the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event. The murder of Cyclops’ beloved mentor was one of the most shocking deaths in Marvel Comics.

Cyclops had become bonded with a fragment of the Phoenix Force and lashed out against the Avengers. Professor X tried to intervene, but Cyclops killed him and in that moment became the Dark Phoenix. Hope Summers was able to absorb the power from him.

6 His Father Is A Space Pirate

Initially, it was established that Cyclops’ parents had died in a plane crash when he was young. That was later retconned when it was revealed in Uncanny X-Men #154 that Corsair, a space pirate and member of the Starjammers, is Scott’s true father. The Starjammers would quickly become a major part of X-Men lore, connecting them to the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe and in particular the Shi’ar Empire. The Starjammers remain a part of the comics today, with Corsair sharing a habitat on the moon with Scott and his larger family.

5 Both His Children Are From The Future

The complexity of the Summers family is generational. Both of Cyclops’ children hail from the future, but from different timelines. The first is Rachel Summers, who originally came from the dystopian future of the Days Of Futures Past storyline, later one of the most successful X-Men movies.

His son Nathan Summers with Madelyne Pryor would be infected by a techno-organic virus and sent to the future to be cured. He would return as a much older man, known as Cable. Rachel and Cable are among the most powerful members of the Summers family.

4 He Became An Anti-Hero

After his murder of Professor X, Cyclops becomes a much darker and violent figure. His actions lead him into the realm of being an anti-hero, with his preemptive and often merciless tactics alarming his friends and allies. This drives a deep divide between the X-Men to the point that Beast sees the only solution as to go back in time and bring forward the original five X-Men – Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Iceman, and Angel – into the present to basically start over.

3 Mr. Sinister Is Obsessed With His Family

A number of X-Men villains are legends while others are lame. Mr. Sinister is possibly somewhere in between depending on fans’ taste, but his fixation on the Summers family has kept him at the forefront in the comics for decades.

The mysterious and manipulative geneticist has been seeking the Summers DNA for decades, seeking to create the ultimate mutant. In some way, his ambitions have proven fruitful thanks to his contribution to the Resurrection Protocols on Krakoa in the current X-Men comics.

2 He Was In Love With Emma Frost

One of the most unexpected romances in X-Men comics belongs to Cyclops and Emma Frost, the White Queen. Their shocking relationship began in the pages of the New X-Men in the early 2000s when the two began a psychic affair while he was still with Jean Grey. Though Emma Frost’s actions are often perceived as manipulative, she did seem to truly care for Scott and the two were together for a long time before Jean would return to the comics.

1 He Formed X-Factor

Cyclops would be in and out of the X-Men a few times in the 80s. One of his most significant departures led to his formation of X-Factor, a team comprised of the original five X-Men. The team came back together in 1986 when Jean Grey was discovered to still be alive. It was revealed that she hadn’t died but the Phoenix Force had simply impersonated her during The Dark Phoenix Saga. The team worked for a time as a government unit before they ultimately folded back into the X-Men at the beginning of the ’90s.
