Fans of Marvel Comics have been enjoying several years of box office domination by films like the Avengers series, Guardians of the Galaxy and now Deadpool. It was X-Men that first paved the way for this new era of comic book films back in 2000 and the movie franchise is enjoying new life again right now after successful installments like The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Perhaps the standout character in X-Men has always been Wolverine, who has been masterfully portrayed by Hugh Jackman on-screen since the first X-Men film. The final trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse spoiled that fans may be getting the highly-anticipated berserker rage Wolverine that we’ve been waiting for, and Bryan Singer – director of X-Men, X2, Days of Future Past, and now Apocalypse – has hinted that so much is true, too.
The anticipation of finally seeing Wolvie in his Weapon-X rage mode may finally be fulfilled in X-Men: Apocalypse. This is something that fans theorized that perhaps we wouldn’t get an insight like this until the upcoming Wolverine 3 (marking Jackman’s last turn in the eponymous role), but Singer seemed to dispel that assumption in his interview with Hey U Guys about Wolverine’s appearance in Apocalypse:
“What’s really nice about his cameo is that he’s the Wolverine you’ve never seen before. He’s truly Weapon X. Not just the guy coming out of the tank, but the weapon.”
Days of Future Past and Apocalypse screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg provided more insight into the various versions of Wolverine that they considered and where they ended up for Apocalypse, during his own Hey U Guys interview:
“There were a lot of different versions. I didn’t feel pressured to put Wolverine in this movie because I feel like there’s so many great characters in the X-Men Universe that we probably could have made a movie without Wolverine and it still would have been an engaging film. We talked about a lot of different versions. There was a version where he got introduced in the middle of the movie and became this sort of drill sergeant for the kids, but that felt like it stepped on Raven’s role of becoming the leader to the kids. There were two or three different incarnations that we tried, but none of them felt quite right. As we were constructing the movie, we always imagined that they were abducted and taken [to Alkali Lake] and that Weapon X would be there and you’d see something that you’ve never really seen in these movies before which is the full on, out of control, animalistic, stripped down Wolverine.”
The Weapon X Project is a concept that dates back to the Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 in 1991. The classic Barry Windsor-Smith Weapon X story arc introduced fans to the history behind Logan’s adamantium-laced skeleton and the secret government project that would be responsible not only for him, but also several others, including Deadpool and Sabretooth. The story goes that when Wolverine awakens from the project he breaks free from the tanks he is in a blind berserker rage that causes him to tear through anything and anyone in his path with extreme intensity and aggression. The rapidly-moving Wolverine busted out of the Canadian facility that he was in up in Alkali Lake and went off into the wilderness. It takes some time for his mind to repair, but he’s left with huge gaps in his memory.
Fans recently learned that the third installment in the Wolverine solo film franchise will enjoy an R-Rating, a welcome perk that was probably paved strongly by the performance of the very adult Deadpool film at the box office. Now fans may be getting the far darker and grittier Wolverine that we know and love, complete with foul mouth and extremely aggressive temper. The X-Men films, and Wolverine solo films, have given us very small glimpses into this side of Wolverine, but he’s generally portrayed as a mature adult team player for the X-Men. Kinberg has said that Wolverine 3 is going to be a violent film set in the future with the tone of a western, which implies the film could partially adapt the the 2008 Old Man Logan comic book story arc.
X-Men: Apocalypse will open in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017, and unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13, 2018 (possibly The New Mutants).
