The Pokémon TCG’s new expansion, Sword and Shield: Fusion Strike, hit shelves last week and there’s a surprising amount of secret rares from the set that are worth large amounts of money. For those more into collecting, there are many special cards based on classic Pokémon that are available for purchase. Even with their differences, each party may want to know some of the most expensive cards so that when cracking packs or looking for singles they can instantly know if their purchase is worth it.

During COVID-19 lockdowns, there was a large increase in interest regarding Pokémon cards due to pack openings on Youtube and Twitch, and prices for the best-looking cards have increased exponentially. The most expensive cards and secret rares do have a low drop rate but their value has been enticing people who don’t usually play the game to buy packs and collect the rarest cards from Fusion Strike.

On TCGPlayer, a box is worth $114 right now and there’s about one secret rare per box, meaning that those who want a specific card are going to have to dig for it or pay the cash to get it. It is harder than ever to collect the specific cards that are based on Pikachu and Mew due to this rise in popularity. Most of the expensive cards gain their demand from collectors looking for great art pieces, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t go in decks and mix with the powerful trainer cards that Fusion Strike provides. Nor does this mean that a player has to have the most expensive cards in order to be competitive. The most expensive cards listed here are related to some of the most popular Pokémon in the series’ history and even if they don’t see competitive play, they are interesting interpretations of the characters that will look amazing in holofoil.

Fusion Strike’s Mew Remains A Best-Seller and Expensive Secret Rare In Pokémon TCG

The competitively viable Pokémon Mew has two different forms in Fusion Strike, a V and a VMAX card. There are also three different arts for each form, bringing the total of new Mew cards to six. The Mew V’s still command a fairly large price at $25 and $68, respectively, but the Mew VMAX’s are the most expensive cards in the set at $144 and $76, respectively, on TCGPlayer. The normal Mew VMAX art was created by Akira Egawa and perfectly represents the chaotic nature of its psychic powers, making it a fun collectible for fans of the Pokémon. There’s also a rainbow variant of the original art as well for those who want a more minimalist design.

The VMAX Mew also represents the new namesake mechanic of the set – Fusion Strike. Pokémon with Fusion Strike usually work well when played together. For example, Mew’s first attack allows it to copy any other attack from a Fusion Strike Pokémon on a player’s bench. With trainer cards like Chili & Cilan & Cress, players can find their Pokémon that works well with Mew, like Deoxys and Latias, and build a deck that takes advantage of their power from the sidelines.

Gengar VMAX Has Wonderful Art & An Interesting Ability In Pokémon Fusion Strike

V and VMAX, for those unaware, is very similar to evolving Pokémon except replacing them doesn’t change their name or type. Usually these Pokémon have better skills and outclass others with their special abilities or unique attacks. Gengar VMAX is somewhat the same way, but its ability actually helps counter the larger Pokémon that could stand in its way. Its first attack does sixty damage per other Pokémon V that opponents have in play, making it a great Fusion Strike card.

Currently sitting at around $130 on TCGPlayer, Gengar’s secret rare alternate art by sowsow depicts a painterly image of Gengar devouring a storybook landscape. Given that Gengar is now also an armchair, this doesn’t seem to be a stretch in terms of its characterization. With Gengar’s history as a mischievous animal that loves to terrorize people and Pokémon, it would make sense that it would also like tormenting children and ripping apart fairytales. Even with this grim outlook on the art, the piece is still colorful enough to be attractive as a child-friendly illustration.

Pokémon: Fusion Strike – Espeon Card’s Art Makes It A Great Collector’s Item

Espeon VMAX hasn’t really found a home in competitive or even casual play in the Pokémon TCG, as many of its special abilities seem tuned to fight a meta that doesn’t really exist. It negates all status ailments, which isn’t really the focus of Standard at the moment, and it also deals damage based on how much energy is on other players’ Pokemon, which is usually only 1-2 right now. All this being said, the art is what takes this card from okay to amazing.

Unlike catching a Shiny Espeon in Pokemon GO, a holofoil alternate art treatment of Espeon VMAX will run a real-world cost of around $125, according to TCGPlayer. Its wonderful art matched with bright colors is the reason why. The VMAX characters are ones that have been Dynamaxed and artist Kouki Saito has portrayed that perfectly by having Espeon fall asleep on a two-story house. With villages and houses to contrast Espeon’s bright fur, this art piece stands out in foil and will probably have worth as a collectible long after Fusion Strike’s release.

Fusion Strike’s Genesect V Is An Exciting Booster Pull In The Pokémon TCG

Genesect V is one of the new Fusion Strike Pokémon inspired by the mythical Pokémon of the same name. According to TCGPlayer’s market price, this card is on sale for about $44. This art by Akira Komayama has a much different feel from the other alternate arts – it shows Genesect breakdancing with a radio in the background. This definitely gives the Pokémon card a different laidback vibe from the others.

While cards in the strongest competitive Pokémon TCG decks are always consistently flooding, the ability on Genesect V to refill players’ hands can still be useful in situations where their Fusion Strike deck is low on cards. With trainer cards that can find Genesect V, players can even send it into battle only when they need to. While this card is less expensive than the others near it, it’s still a valuable pull monetarily and gameplay-wise.

None of these versions of the cards are required for tournament or casual play of the Pokemon TCG – most all of these are especially rare alternate art versions of cards in the base Fusion Strike set. Some cards, like Mew and Gengar, still can pull $20 to $40 price tags but the versions are much more easily attainable through online marketplaces and tabletop game stores. If players want to make a complete psychic deck around the new Sword and Shield cards, it’s possible without completely breaking the bank, but for those who are obsessed with special versions and unique collectibles, these holofoil arts will be the Pokémon cards they want.
