Death in the Pokemon universe is often believed to be almost always directly related to the dangerous battles that Pokemon fight on a daily basis. However, while battle may be one of the leading causes of Pokemon death, there are a multitude of ways that Pokemon can pass away. Old age is one of them.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Pokemon actually live long lives. Considering that majority of the creatures are used to do battle against one another for the majority of their life cycles, old age just doesn’t seem like a factor amongst the causes for Pokemon deaths. In episode 21 of the Pokemon Sun & Moon anime, titled “One Journey Ends, Another Begins,” there was a wild Stoutland who sadly passed away. Initially believing him to be sick, Ash takes him to a nearby Pokemon Center. To the surprise of Ash — and many viewers — Nurse Joy informed the young hero that there was nothing she could do. Stoutland had simply lived the course of his life and it was his time to go.

This particular episode gave a small insight into the life-cycle of a Pokemon that wasn’t battling on a constant basis. Stoutland was a wild Pokemon and did not have a trainer. While not much about its past was revealed, viewers could see that Stoutland was a very peaceful and caring Pokemon. There were no grave injuries that contributed to his death and he died rather quietly and peacefully. The scene was a definite tear-jerker as Stoutland’s best friend, a wild Litten, cried in the pouring rain after realizing his best friend had passed in his sleep.

Stoutland wasn’t a battle-hardened veteran — he was just an old dog. He and Litten lived normal lives like many of the strays on the streets of real-world cities all across the globe. Stoutland’s heart-warming connection with Litten is one that can be related to the real-life connections that different kinds of animals make with one another. This is why it was so devastating to see the bond between Litten and Stoutland severed by death the way that it was.

Stoutland’s unfortunate departure into the afterlife was the first time in the Pokemon animated series that a Pokemon had been shown dying of old age. It is not known if the way a Pokemon dies affects the way that it leaves this world, but in Stoutland’s particular case, his body and soul both were taken to the next life. He ascended to Heaven and left absolutely nothing behind. There is no way to tell Stoutland’s particular age or what the life-cycles of different Pokemon are like.

Stoutland looked noticeably older and a bit wore down, so one could draw implications from Ash’s Pokemon all still being alive and well despite him starting his journey so many years ago. Pikachu specifically,has shown no signs of aging at all and is still almost exactly the same from when Ash’s journey began despite fighting in more battles and journeying with Ash longer than any other Pokemon in the hero’s party. In truth, it doesn’t seem that battle affects the biological aging of a Pokemon’s physical state.

While it is not known exactly how Pokemon age in particular, it is now no secret that battle is not the only cause of death for Pokemon. As Stoutland’s sad death demonstrated, time is perhaps the greatest enemy for all Pokemon.
