You Can Get Shiny Koffing & Ekans From Pokémon GO’s Jessie & James

Earlier today, Pokémon GO got an update that ushered in the age of Team Rocket. With Jessie and James making their debut on the GPS based mobile game, it’s only natural that their trust Pokémon come along for the ride.

After hot air balloons started making their way across trainer’s screens at the beginning of this week fans started to get excited for the addition of the franchise’s most notorious—and blundering—baddies. Jessie and James are floating through the sky in their incredibly fallible hot air balloon with a new dastardly mission. The duo aren’t concerned with nabbing Pikachu this time around, instead their goal is to create Shadow Pokémon. This is a limited time mission, so anyone still playing Pokémon GO should perform their civic duty and making sure this team and their goons blast off again and again.

As all day one fans know Jessie and James are nothing without their signature Pokémon, Ekans and Koffing. And a special event in Pokémon GO is nothing without a special shiny appearance. All day today, trainers have been stumbling upon special versions of Ekans and Koffings. These Shadow versions of the poison Pokémon pair look a lot like their shiny versions, but with a little extra flare. Surrounded by a purple cloud and the sparkly animation of a shiny appearing, these extra special Gen I Pokémon are definitely worth checking in during the Team GO Rocket battle event. While Shadow Ekans looks just like shiny Ekans with a dark aura, this version of Koffing looks like its own toxic fumes are starting to get to it—or it just listed to “Leaves from the Vine” from Avatar the Last Airbender—because it is sporting some very red eyes.

It’s cool enough on its own that Jessie and James are finally showing up in the game, four years after its release, but even special-er versions of beloved Pokémon is a huge bonus. It’s almost certain that these Shadow versions will only be around while Jessie and James are attempting to wreak havoc, so it’s time to glue yourself to that phone screen, pop on some lures and incense, and find these shiny shadowy beasts.
