The recent Nintendo leak has provided information detailing a pitch for a new potential Pokémon title. The Pokémon series has been running since the original two games were released on the Game Boy, but has only grown as more games and other media have released over the years. The series main entries have always been exclusive to Nintendo handheld consoles, with latest entries in the series, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield somewhat breaking that trend by coming out on the Switch.
The major leak of Nintendo data has revealed a potential MMO type Pokémon game called Online Pokémon Project had been pitched by iQue Ltd as a new title for the Game Boy Advance. According to documents found in the leak, the game would have been a stand alone title, but based on the Fire Red and Leaf Green versions of the game. Along with the GBA game, “extended” modes were also pitched to be playable on PC using the 3D assets from Pokémon Colosseum. The GBA would need to link up to the PC in order to play these modes.
The Online Pokémon Project would also have included a method of populating the game with different Pokémon depending on the actual location and weather conditions the player was in. Time of day and weather would have also influenced the hatch rate of Pokémon eggs. While the title would’ve been fully playable offline, it would have greatly reduced the total Pokémon available to catch in game.
Because the game was proposed by iQue Ltd, the company Nintendo partnered with to localize their products for the Chinese market, it was likely that this game was only intended to be sold in that market. While there was no evidence in the documents that prove the game ever made it beyond this initial pitch, the game was given a projected release of 2005, with the PC content being added in 2006.
An MMO style Pokémon game is still something fans have been clamoring for, but that Nintendo and Game Freak seem to have no intention of creating. While the MMO type details we see in this pitch were very minimal, a lot of other concepts would end up being things that made Pokémon Go such a massive phenomenon. Fans can only hope they notice that and decide to give an MMO a proper chance.
