YOU Season 3 Theory Joes New Obsession Is [SPOILER]

A mysterious new target for Joe Goldberg’s deranged affections was introduced in the YOU season 2 finale – but here’s why she might not be the love interest fans have come to expect. Based on the popular novels by Caroline Kepnes, YOU enjoyed widespread acclaim and popularity when it made the move to Netflix. Starring Penn Badgley, YOU centers on the exploits of Joe Goldberg. Good-looking, intelligent, and charming, Joe initially seemed like the perfect man. Unfortunately, Joe was quickly revealed to have a dark side. Prone to obsessive tendencies, YOU season 1 saw Joe stalk, manipulate, and even murder his way into the life of Guinevere Beck. The already-deranged relationship soured even further when Beck discovered Joe’s secrets and he subsequently murdered her.

YOU season 2 picked up in the immediate aftermath. Eager to escape the fallout from his actions – as well as the vengeance of another former love/victim, Candace – Joe Goldberg relocated to Los Angeles. Adopting the false identity of Will Bettelheim, Joe settled into his new life. Old habits proved impossible to shake, however, as Joe immediately latched on to successful chef, Love Quinn. Resorting to his usual methods, Joe quickly ingratiated himself into the lives of the entire Quinn family. After Candace eventually exposed Joe, however, YOU season 2 offered up multiple shocking twists. Not only did Love accept Joe’s murderous ways, she actually encouraged them and revealed that she had amassed a body count of her own.

With these revelations, Joe Goldberg seemingly found everything he had been searching for. Unfortunately, it predictably did nothing to actually satiate Joe’s darker impulses. Though he committed himself to staying together with Love and being a good father to their unborn child, Joe’s customary voiceover likened his circumstances to a prison. Every bit the trapped animal, Joe quickly latched on to the first piece of solace that he could find. Hearing a noise from next door, Joe proceeded to spy through the fence at his new neighbor. Though her identity remained shrouded, Joe was quickly won over by her own love of reading. As such, he vowed to find his way to her. This was clearly setting up Joe’s next victim for the as-yet-unconfirmed YOU season 3. On the surface, many fans believed this to be yet another new love interest. There is, however, a whole other interesting possibility: Joe’s mysterious neighbor will actually turn out to be his own mother.

YOU Season 3 Theory Joes New Obsession Is [SPOILER]

YOU season 2 actually dedicated a surprising amount of time on Joe’s childhood. In multiple flashbacks, it was revealed that Joe had experienced quite an abusive upbringing. Firstly, his mother, Sandy, frequently abandoned him to rendezvous with various men. Secondly, both Joe and his mother were subjected to violence at the hands of Joe’s biological father. Ultimately, the 9-year-old Joe shot his father dead in defense of his mother. Soon after, Sandy accepted her parental flaws and allowed Joe to be taken into care. What became of Sandy after that remains unclear. When asked directly by Love Quinn whether she’s even alive, Joe neglected to answer – either because he didn’t know or because moving his new budding family in next door to his long-lost mother was always an intention of his.

Whatever the case, revealing the new object of Joe’s attention to be his mother would be interesting on a number of levels. For starters, by not having another love interest, YOU season 3 could brilliantly subvert what would eventually become a rote formula. Equally, it would allow a deeper exploration of Joe Goldberg and take the creep factor to a Norman Bates-level of tension. After all, as Joe’s one-time hostage, the real Will Bettelheim, conveyed…everything Joe does is clearly a repetition of childhood patterns. Having Sandy return in present-day – especially if with a new family made in the wake of his abandonment – could force Joe to finally confront his demons. He could finally address his true nature rather than remain ensconced in a denial-fuelled pursuit of redemption. As such, it could bring things full circle – especially if the writers wanted to avoid the same fate as the thematically similar Dexter series and make YOU season 3 simultaneously the last.
