Two of the most irrelevant characters in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! anime are Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood. The two were propped up as strong duelists at the start of the series, but pretty quickly declined in subsequent arcs behind duelists like Yugi, Kaiba, and Joey. By the end, they were just jokes.

The two are certainly comparable to one another, however. So, when Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood are stacked up against one another, who really has the better deck between the two?

10 Weevil: Insect Lockdown

Weevil uses a sort of insect lockdown deck that, in various ways, stops his opponents from attacking him at all. This is a pretty effective deck that almost always causes his opponents problems. While this obviously wouldn’t hold up in the real world, it proves to be an effective strategy in the anime that shuts down anyone that tries to go against the master of insects, Weevil.

9 Rex: Doesn’t Need Multiple Turns To Grow A Boss Monster

One of Weevil’s most prominent boss monsters is Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, a card that literally has to grow in a cocoon for a few turns before it can even be summoned and used. This is a wildly inefficient use of time, and the Cocoon of Evolution is never going to last long enough to get that oversized moth onto the field. Rex Raptor actually has boss monsters that can just be normally summoned. That’s a good thing!

8 Weevil: Super Consistent With Archetypes

While Rex Raptor is obviously very insistent on using dinosaur monsters in every deck that he makes, there’s not as strong of a strategy when it comes to him. He uses dinosaurs and always will, but they don’t go together like Weevil’s insects do.

Every single card that Weevil has in his deck works with one another. They all have a purpose that they serve, while Rex just has dinosaur cards for the sake of having dinosaur cards.

7 Rex: Weevil Uses Insect Queen

But Rex doesn’t use insect queen, that’s for sure. Insect Queen is supposedly a good monster with the way that it’s talked up in the anime, but in reality, it is very bad. It’s not a good card and certainly not qualifiable as an actual boss monster. Props to Weevil for so unabashedly using it as one, though.

6 Weevil: Better Balance Of Trap and Spell Cards

While this could be due to the fact that we see more of Weevil’s deck than Rex’s, it seems as if Weevil has a better balance of spell and trap cards than Rex. All of Weevil’s strategies rely pretty heavily on those types of cards, and it doesn’t seem like Rex uses many at all, and certainly not as a part of combos. When it comes to a solid balance in deck building, Weevil wins the category in spades.

5 Rex: Better Boss Monsters

If it isn’t already very apparent, Rex has better boss monsters than Weevil. Weevil’s boss monsters look like big bads in the anime, but in reality, they just aren’t good cards. They’re not going to get him anywhere.

This isn’t to say that Rex Raptor’s boss monsters are absolute godsends that can’t be overcome. That’s not the case at all. What it comes down to is that Rex’s could crush Weevil’s if the two ever went at it in a head-to-head battle.

4 Weevil: Almost Beats Joey And Yugi

In Joey’s duel with Weevil, the only reason that he’s able to win is because of Gearfried the Iron Knight being immune to Weevil’s parasite card because it’s wearing metal armor. That just makes no sense. And the only reason that Yugi was able to overcome Weevil during the Waking the Dragons arc is because of Berserker Soul, without that card he wouldn’t have been able to do it. At the very least, Weevil gets close to beating two different protagonists. That’s quite the achievement.

3 Rex: The Rest Of His Monsters Are Iffy

While Rex might have better boss monsters than Weevil, the rest of his monsters aren’t very good. They are either normal dinosaur monsters or dinosaur monsters with middling or possibly good effects. That’s about it. Weevil has overall crafted a stronger deck than Rex in terms of monsters, even if it is only by a slim margin.

2 Weevil: Seems To Actually Win Sometimes

Weevil was a higher placing duelist than Rex when they were first introduced and actually comes close to winning a few times on-screen. Rex is virtually never seen winning on-screen. He’s mentioned to win at times, but that’s it. Weevil at least has a record to speak of. He has that going for him at the very least.

1 Rex: He Doesn’t Need To Cheat

Weevil Underwood cheats. The biggest example of this is when he snuck a card into Joey’s deck before their duel, but that isn’t the only instance. Rex might not be the best duelist in the entire world, but he duels with honor, at the very least. Unfortunately, that’s more than what can be said for his insect counterpart.
