Zack Snyder says he might take a look at the theatrical version of Justice League now that his version has been completed and released. His director’s cut of the movie, officially titled Zack Snyder’s Justice League, was finally released on HBO Max last Thursday, and differs from the theatrical version released in 2017 in many ways. That movie was largely rewritten and reshot by Joss Whedon, who was hired by studio Warner Bros. to punch up some of the scenes with new humor. Snyder says he’s never seen the theatrical cut, despite his name being attached to it.

He was reportedly told not to watch it by his wife and producer Deborah Snyder, and has never bothered to watch it, largely to allow his vision of the film to remain unchanged by seeing the theatrical release. He has seen elements of the theatrical version, though, addressing the CGI removal of Henry Cavill’s Superman mustache in the theatrical version by saying he’s glad that’s not the last audiences will see of the actor’s version of the Man of Steel. But now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally out there and complete, the director hints he might finally sit down to watch the theatrical version.

Speaking to IMDB (via Comicbook), Snyder hints he may actually watch the theatrical version now that his original vision is out there for the world to see. Snyder says it might be interesting to see “what roles were diminished or removed,” speaking largely of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg getting excised from the heart of the theatrical cut. Deborah Snyder also speaks about the theatrical version, saying she told her husband not to watch the movie as it wasn’t his vision, but says maybe he’ll be able to watch it “someday.” You can read their full comments below:

Zack Snyder: Because I haven’t seen the theatrical version of the movie, and how it ended up, I was never sure — and I’m sure not, maybe at some point I’ll take a look at it — but I’m still not exactly sure what roles were maybe diminished or removed. I think, of course, number one on the list is Ray Fisher’s Cyborg story being really central to the sort of entire movie.

Deborah Snyder: I think the hard thing, without even [passing] judgment on the movie, was to just sit in a theater and watch it for the first time because it just wasn’t what we set out to do. It wasn’t Zack’s vision, it was so vastly different. When you work so hard, and I think for Zack and I, it’s very personal. You’re spending years — and I mean we’ve spent 11 years working with these characters, so you’re super invested. I think when you see things that are very different, you know, it’s hard to do, and I just felt like he didn’t need to see it. I think now, having completed his vision of the film and where we sit now, it’s a different story because it’s a story that actually got told. So who knows? Maybe he will someday.

Just what Snyder will think of the theatrical cut is up for debate, but he’s unlikely to enjoy it, thanks to the many changes from his version of the movie. But clearly he’s getting to the point where he can let go of the entire saga, especially now that his version is out in the world, and is being much better recieved than the theatrical version of Justice League. It would be incredibly interesting to be a fly on the wall while he watches it, though, and it would be great if the director did a livestream of himself watching it.

While that’s unlikely to happen, what is certain is that he’ll probably be surprised at major differences, such as the Parademons being able to smell fear, and the inclusion of the Russian family in the theatrical version’s final act. When he does watch it, though, at least he’ll be able to say that his version of Justice League is out there, rather than just the theatrical version which distilled a number of his ideas.
