As Awards Season begins to take shape, fans are beginning to get an idea of which actors will receive Academy Award nominations this year. Several of the many contenders, including Sacha Baron Cohen, Vanessa Kirby, Amanda Seyfried, and Riz Ahmed, are looking like sure bets to receive their very first Oscar recognition.
With so many young and promising actors and actresses working right now, it’s impossible not to imagine some of them will receive Academy praise in this upcoming decade. Whether on blockbuster tentpoles or on small indie films, these ten performers have shown they have all it takes to not only receive Oscar nominations but to, one day, win the coveted golden statuette.
10 Zendaya
Zendaya has been consistently working since her Disney Channel days. She reached international stardom thanks to her role as MJ in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, but it’s her role as teenage drug addict Rue in HBO’s Euphoria that took her career to the next level. For her performance, she became the youngest winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
This year, she stars in Netflix’s awards hopeful Malcolm & Marie, a role for which she’s received considerable Oscar buzz. Dune might also include her in the Supporting Actress conversation for the 2022 Oscars. With a bright career ahead of her, the 20s will certainly bring her an Oscar nomination, sooner rather than later.
9 Taron Egerton
After coming incredibly close to receiving his first Oscar nomination for his role as Elton John in 2019’s Rocketman, a role for which he even won the Golden Globe, Taron Egerton is bound to find himself back in the conversation. This young and talented actor, who rose to prominence as the star of Mathew Vaughn’s Kingsman films, has already proven his versatility.
He’s as comfortable starring in action and adventure films, like the unfortunate Robin Hood, as he is in comedic roles, like Eddie the Eagle. This decade, he can actually sing all the way to the Dolby Theater, as he is rumored to play the role of Seymour in the Little Shop of Horrors remake.
8 Awkwafina
Like Egerton, Awkwafina came painfully close to an Oscar nomination in 2020. She too won the Golden Globe for her role as a struggling Chinese-American writer in the 2019 comedy, The Farewell. Her performance garnered critical acclaim, but in the end, couldn’t translate into a nomination.
Her career is in a perfect place, though. This year, she’ll voice one of the title characters in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, and will play the female lead in Marvel’s Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Having already proven herself, it’s only a matter of time before she receives some much-deserved love from the Academy.
7 John David Washington
Talent clearly runs in the Washington family. After all, John David’s father, iconic screen legend Denzel Wahington, is a two-time Academy Award winner. And judging by what he’s already shown, it’s clear John David is bound to follow in his father’s footsteps.
The actor shone in Spike Lee’s dark comedy BlacKkKlansman and jumped to the big leagues with Christopher Nolan’s twisty sci-fi Tenet. For his role in Malcolm & Marie, Washington received positive notices, with many asserting he’s rapidly making a name for himself. He’ll star in David O. Russell’s upcoming film, and it’s not hard to imagine he might get some Oscar recognition for the film.
6 Anya Taylor-Joy
After making a splash thanks to her roles in Split, The Witch, and Thoroughbreds, 2020 finally saw Anya Taylor-Joy become a bona fide star. Her performance in the adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Emma was positively met, but it’s her role as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit that earned her critical acclaim.
Taylor-Joy has several important projects lined up. First, she’ll star in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho and will reunite with her The Witch director Robert Eggers for The Northman, a historical revenge film co-starring Nicole Kidman and William Dafoe. However, her highest-profile project is definitely Furiosa, in which she’ll play the title character, and which might take her all the way to her first Oscar nomination.
5 Robert Pattinson
By 22, Robert Pattinson was already part of two major franchises. A lot has changed since he put an end to his Twilight days in 2012, and Pattinson has proven himself as a talented and ambitious actor, willing to take all kinds of risks with his career.
After getting positive notices for his performances in the indie films Good Time and The Lighthouse, Pattinson returned to big-budget cinema with two different projects. First, he co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet opposite John David Washington. In 2022, he’ll be the next actor to portray Batman in a major motion picture. With a major franchise under his belt and a strong line of indie darlings in his resume, the Academy will surely come knocking on his door,
4 Ana De Armas
After rising to prominence thanks to her role as AI hologram Joi in Blade Runner 2049, Ana de Armas became a breakout star thanks to her Golden Globe-nominated turn in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. 2021 will prove to be her strongest year yet. She’ll play a Bond Girl in the upcoming No Time to Die and will star opposite her now ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck in the erotic thriller Deep Water.
However, it’ll certainly be her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, an adaptation of the 2000 novel of the same name, that’ll receive all the attention. And with buzz already surrounding her performance, she might be one of the surest bets for the 2022 Best Actress category.
3 Gael García Bernal
Mexican actor Gael García Bernal has been working ever since the 2000s. He starred in some of Mexico’s biggest movies, like Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También. For his leading role in Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, he won the 2016 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy.
Throughout his career, Bernal has received several high-profile recognitions, including a BAFTA nomination for his leading role in The Motorcycle Diaries. With his proven track record and a strong collection of performances, it’s only a matter of time before Bernal receives the role that will take him all the way to an Oscar nomination.
2 Kristen Stewart
Like Pattinson, Kristen Stewart has put in a lot of effort to leave her Twilight days behind, focusing on supporting roles in films like Still Alice and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. She achieved critical acclaim for her two collaborations with Olivier Assayas, Personal Shopper and Clouds of Sils Maria, the latter of which earned her the 2015 César Award for Best Supporting Actress, the French equivalent of the Oscars.
In 2021, Stewart will portray Diana, Princess of Wales, in Pablo Larraín’s Spencer. Her transformation seems uncanny, making her, along with de Armas, one of the strongest contenders for the 2022 Best Actress Oscar.
1 Tom Holland
Although he achieved international fame as the MCU’s Spider-Man, Tom Holland was no stranger to film acting when he landed the role of Peter Parker. For his performance in the 2012 disaster drama The Impossible, Holland received acclaim and several nominations, including one for a Goya, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars.
His transition into more adult roles hasn’t been smooth, though. Both The Devil All The Time and Cherry received less than stellar notices, although Holland’s performance was singled out as being one of the best elements of both. This year, he’ll star in his third Spider-Man film, and 2022 will finally see his take on Nathan Drake in the Uncharted film. In between so many franchises, he can easily take a role that gets him the first of what will surely be many Oscar nominations in his career.
