While actress Javicia Leslie has been cast of the role of Ryan Wilder for Batwoman season 2, little is known about the character herself. This is because Ryan Wilder is a wholly original creation made exclusively for the Arrowverse, though she does share some common traits with one of Batman’s newer allies from the comics.

Speculation ran wild as to who might take up Batwoman’s cape and cowl after Ruby Rose left the series and it was announced that an original character named Ryan Wilder would replace Kate Kane as Batwoman, rather than recasting the character. Fans and critics alike were stunned by the sudden announcement that Javicia Leslie, best known for playing the role of Ali Finer on God Friended Me, had been cast in the role. While a variety of actresses were considered for the part, most of them were sought for their physicality and combat skills rather than their comedic chops, and most of Leslie’s work to date has been more comedic than action oriented.

Arrowverse’s New Batwoman Actress: Who Is Javicia Leslie?

While this may seem counter-intuitive for a superhero show, it does fit what is known of Ryan Wilder from the character description in the casting call. Wilder is described as “nothing like Kate Kane,” being “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.” Kate was defined by her military background and training as well as her natural sense of organization and fought with precision as Batwoman. By contrast, Ryan is said to fight in a manner that is “highly skilled and wildly undisciplined.”

Another interesting contrast between Ryan Wilder and Kate Kane is their radically different backgrounds. Kate Kane grew up privileged and in the lap of luxury as the scion of one of five founding families of Gotham City, with two supportive parents and a loving twin sister who was also her best friend throughout her childhood. By contrast, Ryan grew up alone on the wrong side of the tracks and spent years working as a drug-runner, “dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits.” About the only thing Kate and Ryan have in common is that they are both athletic, out-and-proud lesbians.

While Ryan Wilder may be the latest original character created for the Arrowverse, she does share some common ground with one of the newer additions to the Bat Family in the comics. First appearing as an unnamed woman in the first issue of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman run in 2011, Harper Row was an emancipated minor, out bisexual and electrical savant, who worked for the city as an electrician. Harper helped Batman out by enhancing the technology he used to shut down the city’s CCTV system to mask his movements and once saved his life with an improvised defibrillator made from a car battery. After getting some combat training, she later took on the superhero identity of Bluebird in the Batman Eternal mini-series and worked with Batwoman, developing a massive crush in the process.

While Ryan Wilder sounds largely distinct from Harper Row, both characters share a unique status as LGBTQ heroines in Gotham City, who grew up poor but did not grow hard. This fits one note about Ryan Wilder from the casting call, which states that she is the kind of woman “who would steal milk for an alley cat (but) could also kill you with her bare hands.” It will be interesting to see how this new Batwoman makes her way into the fold and wins over the rest of Gotham City’s heroes.
