Granted, Daenerys Targaryen’s descent into madness wasn’t a horrible idea. It was just the way the showrunners went about it that completely destroyed what was one of the most inspiring characters the show created.

Fans can take solace in the fact that the series of books hasn’t yet come to an end. No one knows what direction George RR Martin will go with Daenerys, but there’s always hope. And with that in mind, let us peek into the complex world of A Song of Ice And Fire and choose the quotes spoken by the Mother of Dragons that should have made their way to the show.

Dany and Viserys had a tough upbringing. And although that doesn’t excuse her mad brother’s actions and his treatment of his sister, it’s clear that the way people treated Viserys made quite the impression on Daenerys.

One of the most inspiring things about Daenerys was that she represented a victim of verbal abuse, sexual assault, and poverty rising to a position of power and growing stronger and stronger each day.

But it’s possible to always try and make it a better one. This was Daenerys’ one and only motivation, even though the show took it to an unnecessary – and out of character – extreme.

2 Is it so far from madness to wisdom?

If the quote about her being a monster is a good example of self-awareness and perhaps even foreshadowing, then this drives the point home. The show very clearly knew where it wanted to end.

And if Daenerys becoming a Mad Queen was that end, then perhaps adding more concrete foreshadowing would’ve helped the audience cope with it. Which is why a quote like this made perfect sense given the context.

Dany had power for years. And she always revealed what she wanted to do with it – end slavery, break chains, be just, create a better world. In this quote, she tells us. Perhaps the quote didn’t make it to the show because it didn’t fit the narrative of Game of Thrones by the time it ended. Regardless, it’s still a shame.
