When it comes to Gilmore Girls, fans never tire of analyzing Rory’s relationships. Whether you’re team Dean, team Logan, or team Jess, there is no question that each suitor has his flaws. Rory isn’t perfect, either, but the people she associates with powerfully influence her character. There are some characters who bring out the best in her, and others who bring out the worst.

Dean Forester is one of the most perplexing boyfriends on Gilmore Girls. Love him or hate him, there is no denying that he makes some bad decisions throughout his time on the show. Here are ten ways that Dean got worse and worse as the show went on.

10 First Love Failings

Dean set himself up for failure by being Rory’s first boyfriend. Obviously, this situation can have positives and negatives. There will always be a comparison of Dean, Jess, and Logan.

Some people look back on Dean as a better time, but many would rather point out how he is worse than the other boyfriends (well, worse than Jess, anyway). Overall, he’s a bad first boyfriend.

9 Too Close Too Soon

You probably love Dean in the early days, when he’s macking on a slice of pizza with his girl (and her mom). The innocence of Rory and Dean’s initial romance may seem like a positive, happy memory for avid fans of the show.

But the fact that Dean endears himself to Lorelai and Rory so quickly only amplifies his later bad decisions.

8 Dance Gone Amiss

“Rory’s Dance” is a classic Gilmore Girls episode, and it makes sense that fans romanticize Rory’s special evening, her dress homemade by Lorelai, and her handsome date, Dean. However, Dean and Rory get into some trouble in this episode. They leave the dance (partly Dean’s fault) and fall asleep in Ms. Patty’s dance studio. While this might seem like a harmless mistake, it puts Lorelai on the hot seat with her mother, Emily Gilmore.

Emily and Lorelai don’t need any help getting into arguments, so thanks, Dean. Way to amp up the tension in Rory’s family. Maybe he could have stayed awake and not gotten everyone into this mess.

7 Missing the Point

The infamous Donna Reed episode. When Dean comes over with pizza, Lorelai and Rory are shocked that he doesn’t know who Donna Reed is and has never seen The Donna Reed Show. As Rory and Lorelai mock the program, Dean has a different idea. He thinks it is kind of nice to see “families hanging together, a wife cooking for her husband.”

Rory and Dean continue to disagree over gender roles, and Dean is pretty obtuse about the whole thing. Rory tries to teach him a lesson. She dresses up as Donna Reed and cooks him a classic steak dinner. Dean is thankful for the food and deigns to tell Rory that he does not expect her to be Donna Reed. Their make-up is sweet, but Dean shouldn’t have put Rory in this position in the first place.

6 I Only Love You if You Love Me

This one is obvious for Gilmore Girls aficionados. In season one’s “Star-Crossed Lovers and Other Strangers,” it’s time for the Founders’ Firelight Festival. Dean pressures Rory into trying to get out of dinner with her grandparents because he has planned a three-month anniversary celebration.

This puts Rory in a difficult position, but she makes it work. Dean treats Rory to a nice dinner, then they go to the festival. Then, Dean shows Rory that he’s building her a car. Finally, the clincher. Dean says “I love you” to Rory, and when she doesn’t say it back, he is infuriated. He is mad that she wants to think about it, but if he really loves her, he shouldn’t treat her so poorly. Rory is being the mature one here, continually explaining that those words are a really big deal. Gosh, Dean.

5 Harvard, Schmarvard

Dean and Rory have been through a lot of drama by the season one episode “Hammers and Veils.” Dean manages to make things even worse, though. Rory is preoccupied in this episode with beefing up her extracurricular activities.

She wants an Ivy League resume, and Dean is getting in her way. He is hurt that Rory is too busy to spend time with him. It all comes to a head when he tells Rory that he could care less about Harvard, and he just wants to spend time with her. Big mistake.

4 Green-eyed Monster

Dean clearly gets worse when sparks fly between Rory and Luke’s nephew, Jess. It’s a slow and painful build-up, but episodes like “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” show just how immature both boyfriends can be.

Dean just doesn’t know how to handle Jess, or how to have an appropriate and respectful conversation with Rory about what is going on. Any lingering admiration for Dean starts to plummet during the Jess saga.

3 The Last Straw

Oh, who to blame? The season two episode “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” shows the worst of Dean, Jess, and Rory. Rory is caught in the middle between two boys she has feelings for.

Jess continues to get in her way at the dance marathon, but Dean couldn’t handle it worse than he does. It’s a tough episode to watch, and it makes fans wonder how Rory has put up with Dean for so long.

2 It Takes Two

Dean made a lot of mistakes in all phases of his relationship with Rory, but the worst one happens in season four. Rory and Dean reconnect in this season, even though Dean is married to Lindsay.

Dean and Rory get a little too close, and they have sex at the end of the season. This begins Rory’s worst phase of the entire series. Of course, it takes two to tango, but Dean should not have encouraged the romance.

1 Liar, Liar

Just when you think Dean can’t get any worse…He tries to keep his affair with Rory a secret and even lets his wife think that nothing has changed. Dean deceives Lindsay for a long time, but she finally finds out what happened.

Rory gets blamed for breaking up a marriage, but it’s just as much Dean’s fault as it is anyone else’s! So next time you romanticize the Dean days, don’t forget how it all ends.
