How FF7 Remake Could Introduce President Shinra’s Other Sons

Final Fantasy 7 Remake brings the city of Midgar into the modern-day, re-imagining and expanding the classic story. Like with the original game, the Shinra Electric Power company plays a central role as one of the game’s main villains. At the head of the company is President Shinra himself, a man who built a military powerhouse, and has more secrets than can be counted.

President Shinra’s role isn’t nearly as big as his son, Rufus Shinra, but he’s the domino that starts a whole chain reaction of events. Although it’s not told directly in the main game, President Shinra actually has two illegitimate sons.

These sons don’t heavily tie into the main narrative of Final Fantasy 7, but with the altered timeline of the Remake, it’s possible they could start to play a bigger role. This is especially true considering the Remake has already introduced characters like Kyrie Canaan, a character from a Final Fantasy 7 spinoff novel.

How the Remake Timeline Could Include the Shinra Sons

Shinra’s first illegitimate son appears in Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, as the man overseeing SOLDIER itself, Lazard. Born in the Midgar Slums, Lazard holds a kind of loyalty to the downtrodden of the city despite working for the Shinra Electric Power Company. After Genesis is injured training with Sephiroth, Lazard finds out the truth, and this ultimately results in him helping to create the Genesis Army and start a war against Shinra. Unfortunately, Lazard doesn’t survive the events of Crisis Core, as he injects himself with Angeal’s genes and eventually degrades until he returns to the Lifestream.

Even so, things have drastically changed in the Remake timeline, and there could be something that happened to keep Lazard alive, especially seeing as Zack Fair himself may be alive. This is especially true if Lazard was able to see the Whispers, just like how Rufus Shinra can see the Whispers. The seemingly expanded role of the Shinra-Wutai war, as well as Deepground, could also bring in Lazard, as he strikes out against his father’s company.

The other Shinra son is Evan Townshend, a young boy living in the Sector 6 Slums, and the protagonist of The Kids Are Alright spinoff novel. Evan doesn’t pop up into the timeline until after the events of the original Final Fantasy 7, however, the Remake indicates that could very well change. Two important characters from the novel, and friends of Evan’s, already pop up in the Remake. The first is Kyrie Canaan, the young girl that pops up in the Angel of the Slums side quest, and who can be seen speaking on a podium about how dangerous Avalanche is. The other is Leslie Kyle, who works for Don Corneo, and helps Cloud and the gan track down the Don later in the game.

These two characters have a surprisingly large role in the Remake, and because of that it almost seems guaranteed that Evan Townshend will pop up somewhere, and if he finds out the truth of his birth sooner this time around, he could start to play a vital role. The other aspect to all this, of course, is Rufus Shinra. It seems like Rufus had full knowledge of his father’s other children, and near the end of the Remake, he starts to see the Whispers, even while the Turks can’t. This indicates that Rufus is also about to defy his fate, and he could play an even bigger role than in the original game. Rufus could track down his siblings, either to make sure they don’t cause trouble or to get their help.

No matter what it seems like Evan is guaranteed to appear, even if Lazard doesn’t. Shinra’s legacy doesn’t end with the President’s death, and there’s even a fan theory floating around that Cloud is another illegitimate son of President Shinra. Who knows if there are others in the world of Final Fantasy 7 with the same story.
