Married At First Sight star Clara Berghaus recently opened up about why she continued to use Ryan Oubre’s last name even after the two were divorced. Clara and Ryan first met during Married At First Sight season 12. While they made the choice to stay together after Decision Day, the couple ultimately was unable to stay together after the show was over. They divorced after less than one year together.
When Clara met Ryan for Married At First Sight season 12, the two were off to a rocky start. Both of them stayed together as a result of their interest in being married. However, they didn’t seem to be the right match for one another. Ryan often experienced difficulty expressing his feelings for Clara. At one point, Ryan admitted he hadn’t ever been in love, which did not bode well for their relationship. They divorced shortly after the show in May and announced their divorce in July, and Clara shared updates regarding the divorce on social media in September of 2020.
In a series of videos posted to TikTok, Clara explained the reasoning behind using her ex’s last name on social media. She began by explaining that she felt the need to address the situation as a result of numerous comments from fans asking about it, saying, “You guys ask me about my name all the time, every single day. I can’t post anything without people commenting about the fact that I still have my ex-husband’s last name.” Clara said that the couple intended to stay together after the show and that she was unable to go through the process of changing her name until after all of the episodes aired. She added that Ryan believed “he was more committed to our marriage than I was,” and that impacted her decision to change her last name to his.
Clara explained that she had previously sent out documentation with her maiden name for her passport, intending to change the documentation in the future. Clara said that in addition to the name change documents taking “weeks” to send, there was an error which resulted in the documentation being sent to the wrong location, thereby delaying the entire process further. She was informed that the documentation was finally being processed in June, just five weeks before Ryan told her he wanted a divorce. Clara needed to change information on her passport as a result of the divorce but said she opted to keep the name in an effort to prevent her passport from being delayed any further, saying, “If it is gonna have to be Oubre on this passport, I am committed to keeping Oubre for the rest of my life…If it’s easier and it gets this problem that I’ve been dealing with fixed, then I’m going back to my maiden name.” She responded to those accusing her of seeking attention, saying that she’s not interested in attention from Ryan, adding, “Sometimes I’m looking for attention from men but not that man.”
Getting all the correct documentation together and sent out for a passport can sometimes be a difficult feat on its own without the added injury of a fresh divorce. Given the fact that the Married At First Sight couple was together for less than a year, it doesn’t seem particularly odd that Clara would have opted to keep the name. While some fans may argue that Clara was seeking attention by keeping the name, it is worth remembering that it is a fairly common practice for divorced people to keep their married last names as opposed to their maiden names, largely due to paperwork issues such as the ones Clara describes in her TikTok video. While it’s not necessary for flight attendant Clara to explain the ins and outs of her passport mishaps, it is always refreshing to see a star remain honest with fans.
