Each year, NBA 2K launches with a slew of upgrades and improvements from the prior installment. In previous versions, players were able to exploit opposing defenses far too easily or find scoring on the computer quite difficult. Shooting Mechanics

NBA 2K22 introduces a brand-new shooting meter that heavily rewards precision timing, but is also a bit more generous with slightly late or slightly early releases. On top of having more shots fall when released a tiny bit too late or early, the ability to get excellent shot releases has increased. But the biggest change to the shot meter is its addition on dunks.

In the past, if you got open for a dunk, it would begin an automated animation that guaranteed the shot made the basket. In NBA 2K22, developers aren’t letting offensive players off the hook. Just like how real-life NBA players botch wide-open dunks, so can you in NBA 2K22. A smaller circular meter will start after you begin the dunking motion, and you’ll have to release the meter within the designated space to complete the dunk, otherwise, look embarrassed slamming the ball into the back of the rim. This also translates to alley-oop attempts, as you’ll have to properly time it to score.

Dribbling Is Key

The developers have added more signature dribble moves to break defenders’ ankles, as well as focusing on the importance of basketball intelligence. Players with higher ratings in basketball IQ and overall handles will have an easier time finding separation against premier defenders. But don’t be fooled: defenses in NBA 2K22 are relentless and incorrectly using dribble moves will most likely result in turnovers, and if you’re playing on MyCareer, that’ll mean a large negative impact on your game grade and performance.

You won’t be able to just spam turbo and force your way through a defense; NBA 2K22 requires you to take a much more nuanced and calculated approach to break down an opposing defense. The game rewards you greatly in understanding and using the basics of dribbling and trying to make actual basketball plays. If you use the same moves repeatedly, the A.I. will adjust and defend you tighter as the game progresses. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to call for a screen every play and expect the pick and roll to work for the eighth time before halftime.

Defense Wins Championships

Coaches and fans harp on players committing on defense to not only limit the opposing team’s scoring opportunities but also create some of their own. Playing sound defense can open up many fast-break chances, so knowing the fundamentals and improving so you can become a lockdown defender is the key to ultimate success in NBA 2K22. The developers drastically improved defenders’ abilities to successfully play tight defense without fouling and allowing the offensive player to blow past them.

Now, if you don’t have a high perimeter defensive rating, then superior offensive players will still cause headaches guarding. But playing somewhat competent defense can at least alter shots and make life difficult for opposing offenses. There are still instances where offensive players will get friendly rolls, but that’s been severely reduced when a good defense is being played. In addition, referees aren’t as quick to call shooting fouls if you attempt to contest a shot, which was a major issue in previous installments.
