We give our own take on the winners of the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. Needless to say, we don’t agree with more than a few of the picks.

While many people were watching the infamous “Purple Wedding” on Game of Thrones – or Don Draper’s return on Mad Men, the younger crowd of pop-culture fanatics was tuned in to watch the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, where young people got to show The Oscars a thing or two by picking winners in categories that only the 2014 MTV crowd could come up with (See: Best Shirtless Award).
Of course, for hardcore movie fans there was incentive to watch other than seeing Zac Efron without a top on – or Channing Tatum being awarded as a “trailblazer”; some big summer 2014 movies dropped new trailers during the awards show, including a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Master Splinter reveal and superhero action in clips from Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past, to name a few examples. Movie of the Year
WINNER: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Nominees:12 Years a Slave; American Hustle; The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug;The Wolf of Wall Street
Our Opinion: Obviously this isn’t the Oscars, and The Hunger Games franchise is currently queen of the pop-culture movie kingdom. No surprises here.

Best Female Performance
WINNER: Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Nominees: Amy Adams, American Hustle; Jennifer Aniston, We’re the Millers; Sandra Bullock, Gravity; Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Our Opinion: Jennifer Lawrence is such a pop-culture fixation right now that she has her own acronym name (JLAW). She’s talented enough to sit in a category with these other 2014 Oscar nominees, and based on the nature of her performance, we’re not scoffing that her work in Catching Fire got some kind of award – even this one.

Best Male Performance
WINNER: Josh Hutcherson, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Nominees: Bradley Cooper, American Hustle; Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street; Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave; Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Our Opinion: You definitely lost cred with us on this one, MTV. Serious cred.
Breakthrough Performance
WINNER: Will Poulter, We’re the Millers
Nominees: Liam James, The Way Way Back; Michael B. Jordan, Fruitvale Station; Margot Robbie, The Wolf of Wall Street; Miles Teller; The Spectacular Now
Our Opinion: Guys like Jordan and Teller turned in serious indie drama performances – but hey, laughter is much more viral, and Poulter was a pleasantly hilarious surprise in We’re the Millers.

Best Kiss
WINNER: Emma Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poulter, We’re the Millers
Nominees: Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, American Hustle; Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson, Don Jon; James Franco, Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens, Spring Breakers; Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller, The Spectacular Now
Our Opinion: That Poulter kid is lucky beyond luck… still, American Hustle, Spring Breakers had kisses that we’ll remember for some time – and we never get enough of Scarlett. Eh, take your pick in this category…
Best Fight
WINNER: Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lilly vs. Orcs, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Nominees: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Steve Carell vs. James Marsden vs. Sacha Baron Cohen vs. Kanye West vs. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler vs. Jim Carrey and Marion Cotillard vs. Will Smith vs. Liam Neeson and John C. Reilly vs. Greg Kinnear, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; Jason Bateman vs. Melissa McCarthy, Identity Thief; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Sam Claflin vs. Mutant Monkeys, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; Jonah Hill vs. James Franco and Seth Rogen, This is the End
Our Opinion: That Elf vs. Orc sequence looked like something out of a video game, but the rest of the nominees were no better. You can probably name five other films from 2013 that had better fight sequences. Our pick was Man of Steel’s Smallville battle.

Best Comedic Performance
WINNER: Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
Nominees: Kevin Hart, Ride Along; Johnny Knoxville, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa; Melissa McCarthy, The Heat; Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers
Our Opinion: Hill is hilarious in Wolf of Wall Street. No harm, no foul, here.

Best Scared-as-s**t Performance
WINNER: Brad Pitt, World War Z
Nominees: Rose Byrne, Insidious: Chapter 2; Jessica Chastain, Mama; Vera Farmiga, The Conjuring; Ethan Hawke, The Purge
Our Opinion: Did Brad Pitt even show facial expressions in World War Z? We’re not sure he did, which makes this award a definite head-scratcher…
Best On-Screen Duo
WINNER: Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, Fast & Furious 6
Nominees: Amy Adams and Christian Bale, American Hustle; Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club; Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, Ride Along; Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Our Opinion: Truth be told, we would probably give this award to Hill and DiCaprio – but in honor of the late Paul Walker, we’re not hatin’…

Our Opinion: Being a superhero-focused site, we’re more partial to shirtless Thor. Just kidding (are we?).
#WTF moment
WINNER: The Lude Scene, The Wolf of Wall Street
Nominees: The RV Crash, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; The Beauty Pageant, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa; Car Sex, The Counselor; Danny’s New Pet; This is the End
Our Opinion: We picked this as one of our own top movie moments of 2013. So no arguments here!

Best Villain
WINNER: Mila Kunis, Oz The Great and Powerful
Nominees: Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips; Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek into Darkness; Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave; Donald Sutherland, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Our Opinion: This category was strange to begin with, mixing obvious picks with random ones. And a random won. Fassbender or Abdi FTW.

Best On-Screen Transformation
WINNER: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
Nominees: Christian Bale, American Hustle; Elizabeth Banks, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; Orlando Bloom, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug; Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Our Opinion: Basically everybody from the awards circuit agrees on this one. Leto’s work in Dallas Buyers Club was a milestone.
Best Musical Moment
WINNER: Backstreet Boys, Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson perform in Heaven, This is the End
Nominees: Jennifer Lawrence sings Live & Let Die, American Hustle; Leonardo DiCaprio pops and locks, The Wolf of Wall Street; Melissa McCarthy sings Barracuda, Identity Thief; Will Poulter sings Waterfalls, We’re the Millers
Our Opinion: We loved This Is the End and that musical number was a good throwback – but that pop-locking scene from Leo was also pretty sweet.

Best Cameo Performance
WINNER: Rihanna, This is the End
Nominees: Robert De Niro, American Hustle; Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; Kanye West, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; Joan Rivers, Iron Man 3
Our Opinion: This was a terrible pick. But Kanye was terrible in Anchorman 2, so what do you do? (You go with De Niro!)
Best Hero
WINNER: Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, Man of Steel
Nominees: Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Iron Man 3; Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Thor: The Dark World; Channing Tatum as John Cale, White House Down
Our Opinion: Well, I did personally call Man of Steel the Best Superhero Movie of 2013, so… 🙂
