May arrives tomorrow and the new month is bringing a very exciting calendar of events to Pokemon GO. There aren’t a ton of events on the way, but the ones that are coming are pretty exciting. In addition to the massive Luminous Legends events, trainers can also count on the usual Community Day activities to takeover one of their weekend afternoons.

Some fans were a bit surprised at the official announcement for the upcoming event’s featured Pokemon, despite the recent datamined spoilers. The May 2021 Community Day event features some pretty exciting bonuses that are going to allow players to hatch a ton of extra Eggs while they race around in Pokemon GO encountering tons of Swablu and evolving Altaria that know the Moonblast attack.

Swablu is a dual type (Normal and Flying) and isn’t necessarily the most popular Pokemon in the PvE or PvP metagame. That said, the fact that the Community Day event coincides with the debut of Mega Altaria is fairly exciting and should help build up a little extra excitement and hype for the big day. The chance to catch a few shiny Swablu certainly won’t hurt either…

Start and End Times

11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time

Starting in February 2019, Community Day events now always take place on local time, no matter where you are playing. That changes a bit over the winter months as the time is split between hemispheres rather than time zones. It looks like we’re back to one time at this point though.

Special Move

Evolve Swablu during the event or up to two hours afterward to get an Altaria that knows the attack Moonblast.

Make sure to evolve during the active time window (within an hour of the event ending) if you want to secure it.

Bonuses

1/4 Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed in an Incubator during the event period

Incense activated during the event will last for three hours

Features

Swablu will be appearing more frequently in the wild. If you’re lucky, you may encounter a Shiny one!

Take a few snapshots during Community Day for a surprise!

There’ll be a special one-time-purchase Community Day Box available for 1,280 PokéCoins, featuring 50 Ultra Balls, five Super Incubators, five Incense, and an Elite Fast TM.

For US$1 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you’ll be able to access the Swablu Community Day–exclusive Special Research story, Cotton-Winged Bird.

Stay tuned for when tickets for the Cotton-Winged Bird Special Research story go live! Tickets are nonrefundable (subject to applicable law and the exceptions set forth in the Terms of Service). Please note that this Special Research will not include an in-game medal.

Mega Altaria Debut

Mega Altaria will be making its Pokemon GO debut in Mega Raids at the conclusion of May Community Day on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. local time. This is your chance to collect Mega Altaria Energy to Mega-Evolve any of the Altaria you’ve collected during the event!

Limited Time Field Research

Recent updates to the game’s code suggest that this Community Day, like last month’s, will temporarily offer special Field Research tasks that put an emphasis on the featured Pokemon. Be sure to claim your rewards and clear out a space for these quests if you want to see them.

Shiny Variant

Niantic usually doesn’t confirm the shiny chance until after the event has started, but keep an eye out for shiny Swablu while hunting. They’ve been a part of every other Community Day event, so we fully expect to see them this month, as well.

That’s everything we know at this point! Swablu is definitely not the most popular Pokemon, but is still likely to give trainers a good reason to take a break the usual daily activities and dive head first into some event tasks and shiny hunting.

Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
