When it was announced that Pokémon Sword & Shield would slash the Pokédex in half, fans flew into an uproar, especially when two out of three original starter Pokémon didn’t make the cut.
Squirtle was one of the unlucky two, and unfortunately still cannot be found roaming the wilds. After its appearance in the limited-time Mewtwo and Kanto Starters Max Raid event, Squirtle made its official debut with the release of The Isle of Armor on June 17. The first of the two-part Expansion Pass has brought both Squirtle and Bulbasaur to Galar as exclusive campaign rewards.
Squirtle’s Isle Debut
Squirtle is available through the main questline in The Isle of Armor. Trainers need to head to the Master Dojo. Trainers will then meet and battle a new rival. At the Dojo, Trainers will also have to undertake the challenge of defeating three escapee Slowpokes. Upon returning to the Dojo – after wrangling the rampant Pokémon – the Trainer will be presented with Bulbasaur and Squirtle then asked to choose one to begin training.
As of the time of this writing, there is no method for acquiring both starters outside of trading or transferring through Pokémon Home. But both of these reward Pokémon have Gigantamax forms for their final evolutions, so they are definitely worth training up.
Outside of the new expansion, the most reliable way to bring Squirtle into Pokémon Sword & Shield is to transfer one from Pokémon Home. Trainers can either select one they’ve stored from past adventures or, if they haven’t yet, get a freebie Squirtle through Home directly.
Evolution and High Pressured Moves
Squirtle evolves the same way it always has since Gen 1. Trainers simply need to raise it to level 16 for Squirtle to evolve into Wartortle, then to 36 to complete its transformation into Blastoise.
Squirtle’s evolution chain can utilize both physical and special attacks efficiently. Additionally, this Pokémon’s Torrent ability makes it so water attacks hit with 50% more vengeance when its HP falls below one-third of its maximum. These stats allow this chain to utilize a wide range of offensive tactics.
To make the most out of the Torrent ability, trainers should stack this Pokémon’s move set with Water-type moves. Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail are two of its highest pressured moves. Furthermore, Squirtle’s hidden ability, Rain Dish, unlocks upon transfer and restores a bit of HP at the end of each turn under heavy rain conditions. Pairing this hidden ability with the move Rain Dance makes for a pivotal tactic, allowing this Pokémon to bolster its defense while simultaneously raising the power of Water-type moves.
On the other hand, Skull Bash is a two-turn move that raises the user’s defense on the first turn then strikes the opponent with a 130 attack power on the second. It’s not a water-type move, but it offers great duality and can hit hard where Water-types might fall short.
