While Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is not the first title that comes to mind when you think of Metroidvania games, it includes some elements of the genre. For instance, there are several obstacles in your journey that you can’t bypass initially, so you must return to them later once you’ve gained the right equipment.
Braided robes are one of the things blocking your progress during the game. To cut through them, you need a reinforced knife. This is not actually a separate piece of equipment – it’s what you get when you upgrade the default knife, and there are two ways to do that.
Buy Knife Upgrade From Merchant
The easiest way to get a reinforced knife is to buy an upgrade. It’s one of the most useful things you can purchase from a merchant in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so it’s not a waste of money.
The person selling said upgrade has a stall in the Paititi Market area of the Hidden City, very close to a base camp. You’ll need 2900 gold pieces to complete the transaction.
Complete The Stay Of Execution Mission
There are many side missions in the Hidden City, and completing the one titled Stay of Execution earns you an upgrade to your knife. You’ll unlock the quest during the main story after you hear about Hakan’s imprisonment.
To active it, though, you need to head to the upper area of the Hidden City next to the Temple of Kukulkan. Once there, you’ll find a little girl named Kayara having some trouble with guards. After she’s settled down, speak to her to initiate the quest.
Your first objective of the mission is to get inside Hakan’s cell by luring the guards away. To do so, you don’t even need to leave the area where Kayara is sitting. All you have to do is speak to four specific people in the following order:
- The man to the north, who’s holding a shell and standing beside a bunch of people praying.
- The man on the platform behind the steps where Kayara is sitting.
- The man to the right of the stairs where the guards are posted.
- The man to the left of the stairs where the guards are posted.
Together, these people distract the guards and open the door to Hakan’s cell for you. Walk inside to trigger a cutscene of Lara finding the captive. However, your job is not done as the door closes behind you, so you need to find another means of escape.
Using Survival Instinct, you can find a crumbling wall in the corner of the room. Use your pickaxe to smash through it and create a path. Then all you need to do is follow Hakan until he gets to an exit that you must help him open. Afterward, he gives you a knife upgrade, and the quest is complete.
