It is hard to believe that it has been seventeen years since The O.C. first aired. As the first drama that revolves around the lives of rich kids, it has set the standard for similar series, such as Gossip Girl. The premise of the show is similar to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: a troubled kid from a poor neighborhood gets a second chance when he moves in with a wealthy family. But unlike the iconic ’90s sitcom, The O.C. was more like a soap opera with a fair share of heartbreaking moments and family secrets. Just as there are representatives of all the zodiac signs in the series, they can also be classified based on the Chinese zodiac.

Even the most annoying characters were well-written and they all did some growing throughout the four seasons of the show. Most of them displayed both the positive as well as negative traits of their ascribed Chinese zodiac sign, but not all got what they deserved by the series finale.

12 Rat: Julie Cooper

Julie is resourceful, clever, and adaptive. By marrying Jimmy, she rose from poverty and instantly found ways to function in the high society of Newport. Her biggest flaw is her greedy attitude towards money, which is something that is very common among Rats. After a series of unfortunate events, Julie ends up in a trailer park, but she doesn’t let that get her down. She keeps trying hard to give her daughters a sense of a normal life.

It takes a Rat-like malleable character to switch partners with Julie’s ease and never let anything bring you down. By the end of the series, she harnessed the power of her independence and got a degree.

11 Ox: Kirsten Cohen

Just like oxen, Kirsten Cohen is one of the most conservative characters on the show. The second Chinese zodiac sign has a lot in common with her. Right after giving birth, she went on to become a workaholic. Successful but overly serious, Kirsten slowly started to exhibit the shadow of the Ox: when these people fail to take care of themselves properly, they suffer from stress and slip into depressive states.

In season 2, Kirsten gradually becomes a raging alcoholic but recovers from it right away in season 3. She went on to represent the Ox at its best. She was an incredibly loyal and determined bread-winner of the family.

10 Tiger: Kaitlin Cooper

Like mother, like daughter. Kaitlin is just as stubborn, confident, and playful as her Rat-like caretaker. Her Tiger personality started shining through right after she returned from the boarding school. She’s a natural when it comes to asserting herself as a charismatic leader.

Kaitlin has a huge ego and is rarely considerate of other people’s emotions. She even flirted with her own sister’s crush and didn’t really show much remorse at any point – not even after Marissa died. By the end of the series, she matures and establishes a healthier relationship with those around her.

9 Rabbit: Sandy Cohen

Sandy Cohen is nothing like his serious wife. He is a Democrat and his open-minded convictions come through in his parenting style as well. Compassionate, sincere, and kind, he is a Rabbit. These people don’t really care about wealth and materialistic abundance in life.

Even though he is not traditional when it comes to parenting and career decisions, he decided to stand by his wife regardless of the fact that their marriage started deteriorating in season 2. He could have fled with Rebecca Bloom but chose to do what a Rabbit would: stand by his family.

8 Dragon: Taylor Townsend

Taylor is presented as an antagonist in season 3, but as it turns out, she is a multi-layered and intriguing character. Overly energetic, eager, and socially skilled, Taylor is best described as a Dragon.

Taylor is actually really clever. Her ambition stems from her low self-confidence as she received almost no love from her parents. When Dragon children are surrounded with love, they grow up to be some of the most charismatic people of the Chinese zodiac, but when they are deprived of affection, they grow up to be more like Taylor.

7 Snake: Caleb Nichol

Even though Caleb was an unlikeable character, there is no doubt that he was exceptionally smart. Snakes are among the wisest of all the Chinese zodiac signs and they often come across as cold, calculating, and brooding.

When struggling, Snakes can show their ugly side: they are good at plotting against people and find it easy to betray their loved ones when needed.

6 Horse: Summer Roberts

Bubbly, optimistic, yet shallow and self-centered: Summer is your typical Horse. In the beginning, it seemed like she only cared about boys and shopping, but that was actually just a cover to hide her insecurities. By the end of the series, she grows up to be a passionate animal rights activist who realized the importance of a community.

The positive side of her zodiac sign also started showing when she was dating Seth. He has always been in love with her and with him by her side, Summer always gets to be the center of someone’s attention – something that Horses profusely enjoy.

5 Goat: Marissa Cooper

Marissa is the queen bee of the O.C. because she is rich and she always wears designer clothes. She is one of the most delicate characters of the show and doesn’t care about anything except teenage love and self-destructive behavior. Goats, too, are docile, quiet, and fashion-conscious. They would never hurt a fly and tend to trust people right off the bat.

In season 2, she struggled with depression and substance abuse. Her untimely death is one of the most tragic events in the series and it sets the tone for the final season of The O.C.

4 Monkey: Luke Ward

Marissa’s boyfriend Luke Ward comes across as annoying and arrogant, but it later turns out that he is a stand-up guy with a big heart. Monkeys lack self-awareness and often hurt people without knowing it. Even though he also bullied people, Luke managed to grow out of it and start exhibiting more likable Monkey traits, such as cheerfulness and friendliness.

Monkeys are playful, eccentric, and sociable. Luke didn’t take life too seriously either, which is most evident from the fact that he cheated on Marissa without thinking much about it until he was caught.

3 Rooster: Jimmy Cooper

Roosters are brutally honest, smart, and hard-working. Jimmy was a stockbroker and he highly identified with his professional identity, but because he got too greedy, he schemed with his clients’ money and got himself in a lot of financial trouble. Even though he struggled to always be truthful, the lies kept gnawing at him.

He avoided difficult conversations with Marissa but always came clean in the end like a proper Rooster. Similarly, Jimmy mostly thought only of himself.

2 Dog: Ryan Atwood

Season 1 opens Ryan coming to Orange County. Ryan comes across as cynical, pessimistic, and overly moody, but he actually cares deeply about people around him. His loyalty never falters and he always lends a helping hand. Even though he gets angry pretty fast, he has a peaceful soul. Because he grew up in an abusive home, he struggles to trust people and to communicate in an effective way.

Ryan is just like Dogs. These natives are self-sacrificing, stubborn, and melancholic. Not to mention his compulsive need to take care of Marissa and Theresa.

1 Pig: Seth Cohen

Seth Cohen is peaceful, loyal, friendly, and sweet. Rather than being with people like Roosters or Horses, Seth prefers to be alone and read comic books. Just like Pigs, Seth always tries to avoid conflicts, but it’s really hard since he is often bullied for being a ‘nerd’ and a ‘loser’. He has been in love with Summer for ages, but never musters the courage to talk to her.

Pigs are said to be weak when it comes to the sins of the flesh. Even though Summer was his dream girl, he cheated on her several times.
